Message From the President
S. Roger Dominey, CLU, CFP®, ChFC Over 30 years ago, I graduated from college with dreams of a successful future. I quickly decided that I wanted to build a business for myself, not by myself. Thus I entered the insurance and financial services business. Almost immediately, a senior mentor said to me, "Roger, if you are serious about the business, you better become a member of NALU." (Which today is known as NAIFA.) "Why is this so important?" I asked. His response rings true today as much and more than it did those many years ago. NAIFA is the leading advocate for maintaining the viability of our career in both Washington and Tallahassee! NAIFA members make more money often because they are better trained, informed, and plugged in to the vital importance of their industry and career! NAIFA members enjoy the camaraderie of knowing and socializing with others who have developed successful careers. NAIFA members are constantly afforded the opportunity to obtain the necessary continuing education credits they need to maintain their licenses through our CE programs and lunches. As Washington and our State look for ways to reduce deficits and create new sources of revenue funding, our industry and our clients are under attack like never before. You need NAIFA to fight for you and we need you as well. Please get one person you know to join NAIFA this month! We are all in this together! |

2013 Day on the Hill Recap |
Submitted by Maureen Kirschhofer, CLU, ChFC National Committeeperson On Monday, March 11th, ten NAIFA members from Jacksonville attended the annual Day on the Hill in Tallahassee, FL. Cherri Combs Ohmer, Robert Siddell, Paul Broome, Roger Dominey, Howie Frank, Margie Harner, Maureen Kirschhofer, Todd Middleton, Alicia Burst and Cheryl Canzanella attended the event. I was proud that we had 10 attendees from Jacksonville but would love to see more. If you have never been to see the event, put it on your schedule for next year. The day began at the Civic Center near the Capitol. Tim Meenan discussed the issues that we were going to bring to our legislators. As we cruised the legislators, it was apparent that there is much respect and admiration for our Lobbyist. More than 130 agents participated in this year's NAIFA-Florida Legislative Day On the Hill continuing our streak as the largest in-session conference of agents. We fanned out all over the capitol to lobby for the Citizens clearinghouse, which will bring new options to captive agents, to oppose the hedge fund backed attempt to legitimize Stranger Originated Life Insurance, and to educate legislators on the implementation of Federal Health Care reform here in Florida, including regulation of Navigators who will be placing customers into health plans on the exchange. While we were not able to visit directly with each legislator, we managed to see their assistants and leave material for them to review. We divided them into three areas of the Capitol and it worked out much better than trying to do all of them ourselves. Three of us met them together and each took one of the items to discuss. Finally our day ended with the Jacksonville contingent meeting for dinner at Bone Fish somewhat exhausted but happy that we were able to accomplish all that we did. Tuesday training in collecting PAC contributions and Membership commenced early. Put it on your calendar and join us next year. We need you. You may not have a relationship with a local person but this is how the contact can begin. Get involved, it is so important to have them hear our voice. 2013 Herb Morgan Award of Excellence |
It is with great pride and excitement that we share the announcement of Don Brown, of NAIFA-Miami Dade, as the recipient of the prestigious NAIFA-Florida Herb Morgan Award of Excellence! Don was presented the award at the 2013 NAIFA-Florida Legislative Day On the Hill in Tallahassee on March 11th.
From left to right: Don Brown, Terri Seefeldt, and Tim Holladay
Don proudly carries the legacy of a family tradition of service in the insurance and financial services industry. To know Don is to witness a man committed to upholding the highest standard of honor, integrity and excellence in all that he does. Don has dedicated over 28 years of his life to the insurance and financial services industry, and routinely does more than is ever asked or expected. He consistently demonstrates that most-respected trait of taking the initiative to embrace the challenges and find the solutions. He has a storied history of service and leadership in this great association we call NAIFA-Florida, most notably as President of NAIFA-Miami Dade, President of NAIFA-Florida, and National Committeeman for NAIFA-Florida! NAIFA-Florida is proud to have Don Brown as one of its own, and equally proud and excited to share the news of his selection to receive Herb Morgan Award of Excellence. Congratulations Don! The Herb Morgan Award of Excellence was created in 2011 to honor the many contributions and achievements of an industry leader known by the name Herb Morgan. Herb was a native of Tallahassee, and a 1966 graduate of Florida State University. He was elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 1974, and served as Chairman of the powerful House Appropriations Committee for six years and as Chairman of the House Rules and Calendar Committee for two years. Herb was an eight time recipient of the Legislature's Allen Morris Award, and was honored by his fellow members of the House of Representatives in 1981 and 1984 as "Most Effective Member of the House." In 1988, Herb joined our association as full-time Legislative Vice President, and in 1994 he was selected to lead the NAIFA-Florida staff as Chief Executive Officer. In this role, Herb oversaw the association and provided the firm, decisive leadership critical to ensuring our continued success. His effectiveness as a lobbyist representing members before the legislature, the Department of Financial Services, and the governor's office is evidenced by the thousands of insurance-related bills in which he influenced the language or outcome over the years. Herb served as NAIFA-Florida's top executive and lobbyist until his passing in 2003. In recognition of his incredible service and dedication to the insurance industry in Florida, Herb was recognized with the posthumous award of the NAIFA-Florida Distinguished Service Award, the associations' highest honor bestowed on a non-agent. The Herb Morgan Award of Excellence recognizes one special member of the NAIFA-Florida professional association who clearly goes above and beyond what is expected. The award is given to one member who is not currently serving as a member of the state association board of directors, contributes to the NAIFA-Florida IFAPAC at Envoy Level or higher, is a member of the Pinnacle Club for membership recruitment, demonstrates leadership skills and develops future leaders, is politically involved in advocacy, and is considered a "go to' person for the NAIFA-Florida lobbyist. As you can see, the recipient of the Herb Morgan Award of Excellence will be someone who has dedicated themselves to the protection and betterment of our professional association, and has shown clear willingness to make the sacrifices necessary to achieve those ideals.
