JANE WANTS TO FIND HELP FOR HER INCAPACITATED BROTHER

  Jane - age 50

Jane called me out of concern for her older brother, Rick, who lives in central Florida. Rick is 63 years old, lives alone, is partially blind and appears to have early stage dementia. In addition, Rick's only source of income is social security which he decided to take at age 62 with a much reduced benefit. Jane is concerned that being over 1300 miles away there is little she can do to help him and moving to Florida to care for him is not an option. What can she do?

A Geriatric Care Manager may be able to help. A professional geriatric care manager is educated in various fields of human services - social work, psychology, nursing, gerontology - and trained to assess, plan, coordinate, monitor and provide services for the elderly and their families. Advocacy for older adults is a primary function of the care manager.

I explained to Jane that it is very difficult, if not impossible, to manage her brother's care long distance. Even daily phone calls to her brother will not allow her to get the true picture of his well being. The Geriatric Care Manager can be her eyes and ears and her brother's advocate.

I further suggested that Jane contact the National Association of Professional Geriatric Care Managers at its website: http://www.caremanager.org Here Jane can locate a Geriatric Care Manager who is not far from her brother's residence. As in hiring any professional, Jane should interview the individual to ascertain whether an interpersonal chemistry exists and she should check several professional references.

Lastly, I suggested that it would make sense for either Jane or her brother to contact an elder law attorney so that he can name Jane as his health care agent, attorney in fact under his durable power of attorney and execute a will naming Jane as his personal representative. She can find an elder law attorney by accessing the National Academy of Elder Law Attorney's website at: www.naela.org.

.

LESSON: An elder law attorney can be an excellent resource not only for advising with respect to estate planning and asset protection but can also direct a care giving child or loved one to those who are in the best position to help.

Stieg Larsson who wrote The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo died without a Will. His estate, under Swedish law, passed to his brother and father. His long time partner of 32 years received nothing.

Pulse

Between 2000 and 2050, the proportion of the world's population over 60 years will double from about 11% to 22%. The absolute number of people aged 60 years and over is expected to increase from 605 million to 2 billion over the same period.

It took more than 100 years for the share of France's population aged 65 or older to double from 7 to 14%. In contrast, it will take countries like Brazil and China less than 25 years to reach the same growth.

The number of people aged 80 years or older, for example, will have almost quadrupled to 395 million between 2000 and 2050. There is no historical precedent for a majority of middle-aged and older adults having living parents, as is already the case today. More children will know their grandparents and even their great-grandparents, especially their great-grandmothers. On average, women live six to eight years longer than men.
