InEnglish Digital Update
IED Update
March 2013

Bem-vindo!
Welcome to the first InEnglish Digital (IED) Update.  This coincides with the decision to produce the IED e-zine twice a year (spring and autumn), and to send you an Update between issues.

In this Update we will look at items which sprang out of the previous issue, and anticipate what will be in the next one.

Please send us your comments, and feel free to forward this to your friends and colleagues and encourage them to subscribe

IED 05 comments

"One of my favourite articles was Story-reading and Story-telling by Carmen Sofia Goncalves on page 18, where she uses the BritLit materials to tell stories and inspires her learners to develop their own narratives.

I really liked the way she examines different methods to make reading an active experience for her students.

(Secondary school English teacher, Portugal).

You too can send us your comments on the articles in the next issue by contacting us on inenglish@pt.britishcouncil.org

Donations arrive in Bobo Dioulasso

School materials sent to the High School in Bobo Dioulasso in Burkina Faso from Escola Secundária de Carregal do Sal reach their destination. The project was the action plan element of a successful E-teacher course, Critical Thinking in the EFL Curriculum, taken by Portuguese teacher of English Celeste Simões.  See IED5: Critical Thinking - Promoting Intellectual and Emotional Growth.

Melvin Burgess in action

Melvin Burgess

Well known author of books for young people, Melvin Burgess, has some strong views on young people and the current state of education (see IED5 - Teen Angst).

Though not a teacher himself, he visits schools of many types and in many locations around the globe. In February and March 2013 he visited Sao Paulo, Brazil, which included a week working at St Paul's (British) School.

Coming up...
IED 06 - due April 2013
Coming soon - IED 06

IED 06 takes the role of digital media in the classroom as its theme. We asked various experts and practitioners to contribute. The issue includes:

Graham Stanley writes a piece called From If to When: Creative pedagogy, language learning and technology in which he argues for greater encouragement for the intellectual and creative capabilities of learners.

Nik Peachey makes a case for teaching online and argues it is a way of breaking out of the isolation that is so common in the teaching profession.

Joe Pereira promotes the role of interactive fiction and its association with digital game-based language learning in Literature meets video game.

Susana Oliveira offers advice on using free online tools for developing writing and speaking skills in class.

Anabela Sala looks at some useful tools when working online with younger children in Digital technology, the kids' language

...and lots more!

Got something to say?
We are looking for teachers and other ESL/EFL professionals to contribute to future editions of IED.

You don't have to have published before but you do need to want to share your thoughts, ideas or experiences with other language teachers.

So, if you have some classroom activity which you would like to share with the world, if you have had a classroom experience that was so memorable that you simply have to share it with others, or if you have some thoughts about methodology or strategy then get in touch immediately and let us know what you plan to share.
