Dragon Happenings
Dear Imagine Families,
We've completed the annual administration of FCAT and are happy to have that completed! Thank you to everyone for ensuring we had a quiet campus for our students.
There are a number of assessments administered in the spring. Our annual administration of SAT10 for grades K-8 will be done on May 6th and 7th. We will need a quiet campus on those days also.
Regional Science Fair- Our first and second place winners of our Science Fair will participate in the Regional Science Fair in Bradenton on Thursday, May 2nd! We're rooting for them! Earth Day- I'm sure there were many activities completed f or Earth Day. Here are a few: All 2nd Grade students did a trash pick up around the school. 3rd Grade made pine cone bird feeders and discussed the importance of recycling properly. The 3rd Grade will also put on a school campaign to teach others how to properly dispose of batteries, paint, oil and other toxic chemicals. Next week, Mrs. Cleary's class will also be planting a few plants behind the school. Grade 6 Orientation- We're planning an orientation for our fifth grade students moving to Middle School, and for all our newly registered sixth graders for next year. The date is May 22nd from 1:30-3. The students will hear an overview of sixth grade from the sixth grade team, participate in some team-building activities so the students get to know each other, question and answer session with current grade 6 students, and a snack. Grade 6 Parent Orientation- There may be a need to plan an evening information session for parents of registered sixth graders. If you would like an orientation, please click here to complete a survey that will help us plan and design a program around your needs. Kindergarten Orientation- We're planning an afternoon for our current kindergarten students to host a welcome to the new kindergarten students that are registered for Imagine School. The date we chose conflicts with another event, so an update will be sent later this week with a specific time and date. This week's newsletter issue includes middle school announcements, planning for next year, and information on parent requests. I will be out of the building for the first half of the week, and will be happy to address any questions when I return.

Plans for Next Year | This is the time of year when plans are being made to bring improvement to our next school year. Last week I shared our plans to change the before and after care program from being managed by Imagine School to Bradstreet. I didn't clarify some of the reasons that we believe it is an improvement: - Structured activities will be provided to the students
- Sports activities provided at no extra cost to parents
- Staffing numbers will increase supervision and ultimately safety
This week I'd like to share some of the discussion about the effects of the Common Core implementation on teacher planning and instruction.
- We've notified our new kindergarten parents that kindergarten will be self-contained next year. Beginning next year, students will not have a separate teacher for math/science and another for reading/language arts. Students will remain with one teacher all day. The teachers feel that having more flexibility to increase the literacy block of the day will strengthen the kindergarten program.
- We know there is research to support that a teacher looping with their students to the next grade level has positive instructional effects. We also know that the more skilled a teacher is on planning and implementing the grade level content expectations, the greater the academic progress. Our intermediate and primary looping grades (1/2, 4/5) are discussing and questioning whether looping should continue or whether we should develop specialty teachers at each grade level for reading/language arts and math/science.
Results to date: - Grades 4 and 5 have determined that their students would ultimately benefit more from a grade specific teacher than from looping.
- Grade 4 teams for next year:
- Mrs. Denson (Reading/Writing) and Mrs. Curran (Math/Science). Mrs. Curran has been a long term substitute this year in the primary and intermediate grades and we're pleased to offer her a permanent position next year.
- Mr. Baldwin (Math/Science) and a Reading/Writing teacher to be hired.
- Grade 5 teams for next year:
- Mrs. Kupcik (Math/Science) and Mrs. Hawley (Reading/Writing)
- Mrs. Pendleton (Reading/Writing) and a Math/Science teacher to be hired.
- Grades 1 and 2 are still in discussion about whether to keep things as they are, or whether to become grade specific. Either way, students will still have two teachers. Parents may be uncomfortable about a prospective change, but please know that the final decision will be based not on emotion but what will ultimately bring about greater student achievement.
We're informing parents at this time so there are no surprises. Some parents may determine that the changes are unacceptable and look elsewhere. Please know that any decisions are made based on fact and separating emotional ties with students and families. This is hard for parents and it is also a hard task for teachers. Please refer any questions to the office. |

HONOR ROLL
Apologies to Ian Spurza for neglecting to list him on the Grade 6 Honor Roll list last week.
POSTEROUS SHUTTING DOWN
As many of you may already know, Posterous will be shutting down on April 30. This means that our Imagine Middle School website will be closed, as well as all of the teacher pages attached. We are currently searching for an alternative to use next year, but for the remainder of this year we will not have a website. We will be extra vigilant in making sure your child's planner is filled out, and that should be where you look for information regarding classes and school events. If you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact your child's teachers. Please bear with us as we navigate through the end of the year. Thanks for your understanding!

Human Growth and Development
| Middle School Parents have requested information about the content of the middle school Human Growth and Development instruction that occurs each spring.
HUMAN GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT
The Pasco County schools provide a unit of study each year to students in grades 4-8. Imagine has used their instructional materials for the last few years. A brochure was designed by the district for grades 4 and 5. This brochure was distributed to those parents, but we had nothing to distribute to our middle school students. Thank you to Mr. Denson for compiling a one pager for each grade level that based on the instructional plan. This is the first year however, that a district nurse will not be available to speak with parents or students. Grade 6 OverviewGrade 7 OverviewGrade 8 Overview

Parent Request Letters
| This is the time of year that parents ask whether they can request a specific teacher. Here is my belief about the role of parent request letters:
- Parents know their child better than anyone else.
- Parents know what they'd like to see for their child
- Parents do not know a teacher unless one of your other children had the same teacher. ( And remember, what's good for one sibling isn't necessarily what's best for the next one.)
- One parent's recommendation isn't necessarily what your experience would be. All children are different.
Parents may send a letter that talks about what you know best- your child. Parents may request a specific teacher if a sibling had that teacher and you believe it would be beneficial for the next child also. Parents may request not to have a specific teacher if a sibling had that teacher and you don't think it would be a good fit. Parent request letters requesting a specific teacher based on recommendations will be returned to you. Please send any letters to the principal. I hope this helps. |
