Dragon Happenings

Dear Imagine Families,
  Valentines
This week we're excited that our Media Center opens its doors for regularly scheduled usage.  Many, many thanks to Linda Spurza and her volunteers that spent countless hours getting all the books labeled and entered into the check-out system.  Your child has a scheduled time they'll be in the media center.
Here is the schedule.

The Spirit Week events this week are extended to the entire school.  Information about each day are listed below.  We've incorporated Valentine's Day and JumpRope/Hoops for Heart that will be on Thursday and Friday.

This issue also includes an offer from the cafeteria for parents to order cookies for special events, have breakfast with your student on Friday, used uniform sales, the annual Duke Talent Search, and some repeat articles that are pertinent this week.

We're starting to contact parents whose child will be offered a seat at Imagine School in August 2013.  These parents will have until March 1st to complete their registration packet or forfeit their seat.  We now have a waiting list for all grade levels next year with only a few remaining seats for grade 6.  Parents that apply after February 1st are placed at the bottom of the waiting list.

School-wide Spirit Week
SpiritWeekThe middle school has planned another spirit week, and is inviting all grades to participate. The dates are February 11-15.  Flyer

Talent Search
DukeTIP The Duke University Talent Identification Program is a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving academically gifted youth. As a world leader in gifted and talented education, Duke TIP works with students, their parents, and educators to identify, recognize, challenge, engage, and help students reach their highest potential.

The deadline for the grades 4-6 talent search is coming up.  A flyer with more information can be found here.
School Choice
SchoolChoice2The district has opened up their annual School Choice window on February 1st and it will close on March 1.  Parents of 8th graders who want their child to attend a different high school than their zoned school must complete the school choice form during this window.  Information on district choice can be found here.

School choice for charter schools is open year round as long as there are seats available.  We are identifying our new students for August 2013 following the lottery held on February 1st. Many thanks to our families that recommended Imagine to their families and friends.
Math Strategies
CommonCoreMany parents wonder why their child is learning so many different strategies in math.  I often hear "That's not the way I learned it and I don't know how to help."  The reason for the change is the Common Core Standards.  Common Core is a set of standards adopted by Florida and 45 other states to meet or exceed the standards in high performing countries (especially in math).  The Common Core requires that students not just memorize, but develop a deeper understanding and see connections.  The link below provides lots of information on Common Core.  At the bottom of the page are some excellent links called Supporting your Child in Mathematics.  I hope you find the information helpful.

http://schools.nyc.gov/Academics/CommonCoreLibrary/ForFamilies/default.htm

Parents can search the internet and find information on the Common Core from many states.  Since all the states are implementing the same set of standards, articles from any of the states is aligned with our work at Imagine.
