Dont' t miss a very special event at the IIC Melbourne
to celebrate the launch of
A Very Normal Man
First translation into English of Un borghese piccolo piccolo
by Italian author Vincenzo Cerami
Presentation in English by Australian scholar Isobel Grave.
Istituto Italiano di Cultura, 233 Domain Rd, South Yarra
Thursday 12 November, 6.30pm
Free event. Light refreshments
This creepy little novella was originally published in 1976 as Un borghese piccolo piccolo, literally "a petty petty bourgeois". It is a ferocious if brief critique of Italian society in the 1970s; it sweeps like a searchlight across the dark spots in Italian society of the era: graft, hypocrisy, corrupt institutions and violent crime. Giovanni Vivaldi is a minor public servant in Rome, determined to secure a job for his son in his own department, and prepared to do some extraordinary things to make that happen. But a wild blow of fate destroys his plans, and he exacts a chilling revenge that reminds the reader of the brief but brutal opening scene.
Vincenzo Cerami, who died in 2013, was nominated for an Academy Award in 1999 for his original screenplay of "Life Is Beautiful".
Dr Isobel Grave has translated this novel which has been published in English as "A Very Normal Man" by Wakefield Press.
She will talk about Cerami's achievements in literature and cinema and show movie clips from the film "Un borghese piccolo piccolo" directed by Mario Monicelli in 1977, starring Alberto Sordi.
Copies of "A Very Normal Man" (Wakefield Press, S.A.) will be available for purchase
on the evening at a special price: $18
