Vincenzo Cerami, Italian novelist, poet, scriptwriter and dramatist (1940 - 2013) worked with some of the most talented directors from the golden age of Italian cinema including Pier Paolo Pasolini, Marco Bellocchio, Giuseppe Bertolucci and Gianni Amelio.
His first novel "Un borghese piccolo piccolo" (1976) is a chilling story of a civil servant whose son is accidentally killed during a robbery.
Cerami is best known for his long running and successful collaborations with the actor/director Roberto Benigni. He co-wrote "La Vita è Bella" (Life Is Beautiful) in 1997 which received three Oscars and was nominated for best screenplay.
Roberto Benigni's tribute "He taught me how to make people's hearts beat" highlights Cerami's legacy that lives on in his work. Vincenzo Cerami visited Melbourne in 2009 as a guest of the Melbourne Writers Festival
with the support of the Istituto Italiano di Cultura.
Dr Isobel Grave is a Cassamarca lecturer at the University of South Australia
(School of Communication, International Studies and Languages).
