The talk will provide an overview of the Florentine cultural milieu in the period between Italian unification and World War I. We will see how for about half a century, Florence became the de facto cultural capital of the new nation, a place where intellectuals and artists gathered and where some of the most important cultural movements of the period were either launched or acquired national notoriety. We will consider the role played by the Macchiaioli painters in forming national identity; by the Decadent movement in opening up Italian art to the most innovative European trends; and by Futurism in introducing modernity into Italian art.
