Transforming Propaganda: Roberto Rossellini's
"Un pilota ritorna"
A talk in English by Prof Zygmunt Baranski
(Notre Dame University, US; University of Cambridge, UK)
Istituto Italiano di Cultura
Elm Tree House, 233 Domain Road, South Yarra
Thursday 9 October, 6.30pm
Rossellini's 1942 film undercuts its apparent propagandist aims by drawing on a wide range of cinematic genres. Indeed, rather than serving fascist war aims, Un pilota ritorna calls into question various aspects of fascist policy, granting primacy to ethics over politics, and recognising the importance of pluralism.
Professor Zygmunt Baranski is among the world's leading authorities on modern Italian literature, film, and culture.
