SOCI IIC - IIC MEMBERS

Starting from January 2014 membership to the Italian Cultural Institute will follow a calendar year system. This will be an improvement, since it should be easier for everybody to remember just one date (each January) for the renewal of their membership.
To reward the loyalty of existing members who have renewed their membership in 2013, their membership will be extended until the end of 2014.
For all those who become members of the Italian Cultural Institute in the next few months, their membership will also be extended until the end of 2014.
These changes are part of a planned improvement to the membership system, which will see IIC members enjoy more benefits and special events free of charge, while non-members will have to pay a fee to participate. There will also be more events organised with other Institutions which will see discounted tickets only for IIC members.
In 2014 it will be more and more beneficial and enjoyable to be a member of the Istituto Italiano di Cultura/Italian Cultural Institute. Look out for "Special Events for IIC Members" !!!

Italo Calvino, Umberto Eco
and the transforming power of words
In collaboration with RISM (Research in Italian Studies Melbourne)
with Professor Martin McLaughlin from Oxford University (UK).
 | "Print Gallery". Lithograph by M. C. Escher, 1956 |
Monash University, Caulfield Campus,
Building S, Room 23

Tuesday 1 October 2013
5.30pm
Italo Calvino and Umberto Eco wrote many essays on world literature, so much so that they would both have been major literary critics even if they had not written any novels. Both authors were also influenced by many non-Italian writers in their creative works. However, the way they interpreted and were inspired by texts from other literatures was different.
This seminar seeks to compare these two major Italian writers in terms of both their criticism of world literature and the different ways their fiction was transformed by it. What emerges is Eco's privileging of medieval
texts as opposed to Calvino's love for Ariosto, and in the modern era their differing reactions to major figures such as Joyce and Borges. What they have in common is their capacity to draw creative inspiration even from texts that are very remote from the poetics of these two contemporary writers.

La Grande Bellezza
(The Great Beauty)
a comedy/drama directed by
Paolo Sorrentino with Toni Servillo, Carlo Verdone and Sabrina Ferilli.
The Italian Cultural Institute is a proud Sponsor of LIFF 2013.
The Great Beauty plunges into the world of the charismatic 65-year-old Jep Gambardella (Toni Servillo), a famous journalist and single man-about-town, whose early promise as a novelist was never fulfilled. Jep is content enough with his life, made up of wild Euro-trash parties, fancy soirées and encounters with the amusing and often absurd characters that inhabit his largely after-dark existence. Jep finds meaning in every part of his beloved city. When the husband of Jep's first lover reveals that his recently deceased wife was in fact always truly in love with Jep, a revitalised outlook on life and the city he loves is awakened. From the grandeur of Rome's most famous palaces, aqueducts and fountains to a secret garden locked away by key, The Great Beauty is a carnival for the senses and a cinematic feast - at once delightful, nostalgic, and inspiring.

TERRAMATTA
Il Novecento italiano di Vincenzo Rabito, analfabeta siciliano.

Italian Cultural Institute
233 Domain Road
South Yarra
Tuesday 3 December
6.30pm
The Italian XXth Century of Vincenzo Rabito is a 2012 documentary film directed by Costanza Quatriglio, based on the memoir TerraMatta by Vincenzo Rabito (born in 1899 in Chiaramonte Gulfi, Ragusa). It is the story of a century, through the eyes of a former labourer and Sicilian worker, who although semi-literate, had a great narrative ability. Vincenzo describes World War I, then his African adventure in Ogaden, his times in German mines as a migrant and all of World War II, from the beginning to the arrival of the Allied Forces in Sicily. His main pride, before his death in 1981, was to have been able to send his children to school and then to university.
The documentary won several awards in Italy, including the Nastro d'Argento 2013, and is based on the best-selling book published by Einaudi in 2007.
In collaboration with the Australasian centre for Italian Studies (ACIS), the Flinders University Department of Language Studies (Italian) and the Research Centre for Languages and Cultures (University of South Australia)
Chiara Ottaviano, co-scriptwriter and producer of the documentary, along with Roberto Nobile (narrator/voice-over) and Luca Ricci, editor of the book "translated" from the manuscript written by Vincenzo Rabito, will be present at this Premiere screening.
