ITALIAN CULTURAL INSTITUTE MELBOURNE

MARCH, APRIL, MAY 2013 EVENTS

INTRODUCTION by the new Director of the ICI (Italian Cultural Institute)

While waiting to meet all the Members and the Friends of the ICI very soon, I wish to introduce myself. My name is Lina Panetta and I am the new Director of the Italian Cultural Institute. I came to Melbourne at the end of January, but mine is a "return" to Australia, since I worked at the ICI in Sydney in the mid 90s. I fell in love with Australia so much that I've done my best to come back!

I have lots of ideas and projects for cultural events and language courses to organise. However, within the next few months, I'll have to give priority to some urgent, expensive maintenance works for Elm Tree House, the beautiful building which has been home to the Italian Cultural Institute since 1970. So, soon you'll see the sign "Lavori in corso/works in progress"!

I ask you to be patient and keep supporting the ICI with your membership and renewal of it if it has expired. It will be worthwhile!

I am looking forward to meeting you all here at the Istituto Italiano di Cultura and I wish you all a very Happy Easter!

Arrivederci a presto!

Lina Panetta

RIPORTANDO TUTTO A CASA

First of a series of seminars organized in collaboration with RISM (Research in Italian Studies in Melbourne),
Dr Brigid Maher (La Trobe University) on The 1980s as a decade of transformation, as seen in the novel "Riportando tutto a casa" by Nicola Lagioia (2011).

Content of Dr Maher's talk

The 1980s brought considerable change to Italy: greater affluence in some sectors of society, the advent of commercial television, increased globalisation and Americanization, and some significant technological developments. In this talk Dr Maher will explore how these different kinds of transformation are portrayed in Nicola Lagioia's 2011 novel "Riportando tutto a casa". Starting out with the arrival in Italian homes of the television comedy show Drive In ("the laughter that was to bury us all"), the novel depicts the period as one of both personal transformation (these are the narrator's formative years) and societal transformation

ELIO PETRI

A rare opportunity to view a collection of Elio Petri's films.

A retrospective of 6 Italian films directed by Elio Petri (1929-1982), one of the most eclectic Italian film makers. Not always loved by critics due to the anti-aristocratic "flashiness"of his directorial style, and often considered "inopportune' by the main political parties, he can be seen today, along with Pier Paolo Pasolini, as the most modern of 1960s Italian directors:

- The Assassin (Wed 15 May 7pm)
- The 10th Victim (Wed 15 May at 8.55pm)
- Property is No Longer a Theft (Wed 22 May at 7pm)
- I giorni contati (Wed 22 May at 9.10pm)
- Todo modo (Wed 29 May at 7pm)
- We Still Kill the Old Way (Wed 29 May at 9.15pm)
