FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Hawaiian Legacy Hardwoods Receives Accreditation as a B Corporation
Paauilo, Hawaii - June 27, 2013 - Hawaiian Legacy Hardwoods (HLH), today announced its accreditation as a certified B Corporation, a status that has been achieved by less than 800 companies worldwide. HLH joins a new class of companies that use the power of business to help to resolve social environmental and economic problems, leading a global movement to redefine success in business.
"Our mission has always been to create a high value, carbon neutral sustainable business model which benefits our clients, empowers our employees, supports our communities and eliminates our environmental impact," said Jeff Dunster, CEO of HLH. "We sought B Corp accreditation because we share those same values that power the B Corp community, and will provide us with a third party set of standards by which we can assess our progress in meeting those goals".
About B Lab B Lab is a nonprofit organization that serves a global movement to redefine success in business so that all companies compete not only to be the best in the world, but the best for the world. B Lab drives this systemic change through a number of interrelated initiatives: 1) building a community of Certified B Corporations to make it easier for all of us to tell the difference between "good companies" and good marketing; 2) passing legislation to accelerate growth of social entrepreneurship and impact investing (12 states have already passed benefit corporation legislation); 3) driving capital to high impact investments through the use of GIIRS Ratings and Analytics (more than 60 investors with over $3B in impact assets under management use GIIRS); and 4) providing powerful tools for businesses to measure, compare and improve their social and environmental performance.
Certified B Corporations meet higher standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability. B Corp believes that setting these higher standards in a clear and measurable way matters, because, as B Corp co-founder Jay Cohen Gilbert says, "With so many companies marketing themselves as 'good' and 'green', it's important walking the talk."
One more reason to feel good about this forest-more than one third of all Legacy Tree proceeds goes to charity. The HLH Legacy Tree program currently supports more than 240 charities worldwide--planting roots in the forest while planting roots in the community. Learn more about sponsoring your own legacy tree: www.legacytrees.org
HLH is donating 1000 acres of its sustainable koa project to restoring an entire native Hawaiian forest eco-system on the slopes of Mauna Kea, Hawaii. Once the personal property of King Kamehameha The Great, the first king of Hawaii. This old growth koa forest was almost lost to a century of clear-cut harvesting and cattle grazing, but with the help of caring individuals is making a comeback. * www.LegacyTrees.org * www.HawaiianLegacyHardwoods.com

Hawaii's Pacific Edge Magazine Partners with Hawaiian Legacy Hardwoods to Become First Print Magazine in United States to Offset
Both Carbon Production and Paper Usage by Planting US Grown
Indigenous Tropical Hardwood Trees
By: Pemgala
June 10, 2013
|
June 10, 2013 -Honolulu, Hawaii-Pacific Edge Magazine, flagship publication by Element Media, Inc., has partnered with Hawaiian Legacy Hardwoods (HLH) to become the first magazine in the United States to offset its carbon production, production footprint and wood usage by planting indigenous, tropical Koa trees through the Hawaiian Legacy Reforestation Initiative. Naomi Hazelton-Giambrone and Jamie Giambrone, co-founders of Element Media, Inc. and co-publishers of Pacific Edge Magazine, recently traveled to Hawaii's Big Island to purchase and plant 140 Legacy koa trees on the Hamakua Coast. Hawaiian Legacy Hardwoods was also a major sponsor of the 3rd Annual Pacific Edge Magazine Business Achievement Awards and presented the "Commitment to Green" Award.
Through the Hawaiian Legacy Reforestation Initiative, HLH is partnering with other like-minded organizations, including Pacific Edge Magazine, to restore 1,000 acres of historic koa forest on the Hamakua Coast of Hawaii Island. Koa is one of the most valuable hardwoods on the planet and HLH is donating 1,000 acres of its sustainable koa project to help this reforestation effort. According to the World Resource Institute, the current rate of rainforest destruction (50 million acres per year) will produce a global shortage by 2023. In Hawaii, agriculture and clear-cut lumber practices of the past century have eliminated over 90 percent of the koa forests already.
As Hawai'i's cutting-edge business and lifestyle publication, Pacific Edge Magazine routinely highlights sustainability efforts and environmental awareness through its editorial features and sponsorship of Green Drinks Honolulu. By partnering with HLH for its exclusive red carpet gala and providing each guest with a Legacy Seed Kit, Pacific Edge Magazine drew attention to the importance of HLH's mission and promoted the reforestation of tropical hardwood trees in Hawaii.
"Growing up surrounded by Hawaii's beauty, I'm acutely aware of the need to protect and preserve our environment," says Naomi Hazelton-Giambrone, co-founder of Element Media, Inc. and co-publisher of Pacific Edge Magazine. "With this in mind, Pacific Edge Magazine is very cognizant of our environmental impact and we seek to minimize our carbon footprint. So, by partnering with Hawaiian Legacy Hardwoods, we are brining attention to a cause that we care about deeply."
"Partnering with Pacific Edge Magazine and sponsoring its 3rd Annual Business Achievement Awards Gala highlights the importance of preserving indigenous hardwoods and the positive opportunity to be involved in this movement," adds Jeff Dunster, CEO of Hawaiian Legacy Hardwoods. "Pacific Edge Magazine is truly 'walking the talk' and serves as an outstanding role model for other corporations and organizations."

From The Field
Darrell Fox, COO

The Etymology of the phrase "busman's holiday" has been traced back to the United Kingdom in 1893. The idea contained in it is this simple phrase is that a person going on vacation would engage in activities very similar to their work. My wife and I just got back from just such a vacation. Much of our work at HLH consists of walking through the thousands of trees that HLH has planted to restore an environment. It also involves walking through areas that are undisturbed to see what that environment once looked like and can be once again. Our particular busman's holiday consisted of a 10 day trek from San Francisco over the Golden Gate Bridge ultimately ending up in Glen Ellen. This took us to Muir Beach, through Muir Woods and on to the Jack London Forest. The forest portion of the hikes came to about 70 miles. These are the very woods that inspired the beginnings of the environmental movement in the United States. John Muir's name is "almost ubiquitous" in the modern environmental consciousness. According to author William Anderson, Muir exemplified "the archetype of our oneness with the earth", while biographer Donald Worster says he believed Muir's mission was "...saving the American soul from total surrender to materialism." Muir's vision and advocacy lead to the passage of the national parks bill in 1890 and the founding of the Sierra Club in 1892, a year before the first recorded use of the phrase, "busman's holiday".
View of Tomales Bay from Point Reyes
We live and work in a very beautiful place, but sometimes you have to go to someone else's forest to see the forest for the trees. A lot of very dedicated people are working in forests throughout the world to preserve what is there and to restore what once was. Our crew is deeply committed and rightfully proud of the work we do. Some are on vacation and those vacations are often busman's holidays as well. Their outdoor activities take them to many of the beautiful wild places of our country and as they come back to work you can feel the enthusiasm they bring with them as a result of realizing they are part of something bigger. They are part of the environmental consciousness that John Muir, Thoreau, Emerson and others awakened in the American soul.
It was a delight to come home and find that operations hadn't skipped a beat. Fertilization is almost complete for this season and crews are removing invasive plants from the fields targeted for reforestation this coming season. The nursery has been cleaned and we are accessing what additional native plants we can target for nursery propagation and reintroduction.
We have been focusing a lot of energy on what can be done to get out the message that we are all part of the solution. If you explore the HLH website you will find a plethora of resources and links to like-minded organizations. More will be added all the time. I think the unspoken message in the concept of the busman's holiday is telling us that deep down we love what we do when our leisure is more of the same. I need to thank the people of Wine Country Trekking (http://www.winecountrytrekking.com) for sharing a part of their world with people who love to walk. There detailed and customized hiking and nature guide enhanced the experience beyond anything we could have planned on our own. I also need to thank everyone who has encouraged us every step of the way. I hope you find the same joy in everything you do.

HLH has become the 777th Certified B Corporation in the world and only the 7th in the state of Hawaii. Is it a big deal? That depends. My friend, business partner and HLH COO was one of the organizers of the first Earth Day while attending Wayne State University in 1970. Was it a big deal at the time? Well, I was only 10 at the time, but I remember it making the evening news as one of those human interest stories sandwiched between Vietnam protests and flower power, but that was about it. Now, history refers to this event as the birth of the modern environmental movement, with the whole world participating annually and its founder, receiving the Medal of Freedom.
I think we are only at chapter one in the B Corporation saga. I believe what is now a "1970" event will become a standard which will define business in the future. As time passes, more and more businesses will shed the notion that the bottom line is the only thing that matters. I believe the B Corporation will redefine the bottom line.

Sustainable Industries
There are many benefits to becoming a B Corp.
B Corp certification sets you apart as a thought-leader, distinguishes your business in a crowded market, and helps associate your brand with the most socially and environmentally responsible companies on the planet--including Patagonia, Seventh Generation, Method, Etsy, Cabot Creamery, and 600 other B Corps with over $4 Billion in global revenues.
While other third-party certifications like LEED, Fair-Trade, and Energy Star are beneficial for any business, B Corp certification is particularly noteworthy and well-respected because it evaluates your entire business model--from your workers, to the community, to your impact on the environment.
Inc. Magazine calls B Corp certification "the highest standard for socially responsible businesses," and The New York Timessays, "B Corp certification provides what is lacking elsewhere: proof."
Here are 5 huge benefits of B Corp certification:
1) Thought-Leadership
B Corps are leaders in the eyes of the media, consumers, entrepreneurs, and investors around the world because they use the power of business to solve social and environmental problems.
The B Corp community, for example, has led the push in California, New York, Illinois, Louisiana, South Carolina, and six other states to create a new type of corporate structure called a "benefit corporation." Benefit corporations are a distinct legal entity (similar to a traditional corporation or LLC) that are required to create a positive impact on society and consider the effect of its decisions on all stakeholders, not just shareholders.
Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, says that "benefit corporations create the legal framework to enable companies like Patagonia to stay mission-driven through succession, capital raises, and even changes in ownership by institutionalizing the values, culture, processes, and high standards we have put in place."
In other words, B Corps are not getting attention because they are merely an exciting type of certification. B Corps are getting attention from people like Bill Clinton, Nicholas Kristof, CBS News, and PBS NewsHour because they are changing the old rules of business.
2) Increase Consumer Trust
According to the brand innovation firm BBMG, less than 1 percent of consumers believe what businesses claim or advertise. Rigorous, transparent, and independent third-party assessments
like B Corp certification can increase trust in your business and attract more customers.
Indeed, the B Corp logo has been recognized by the Sierra Club as one of the most trustworthy eco logos, and the only certification that evaluates the entire company, rather than focusing only on the attributes of a building, product, or service.
3) Attract the Best Employees
Want to attract top MBA students?
The Yale School of Management and NYU Stern School of Business recently announced a new financial aid program for graduates who want to work for certified B Corps or benefit corporations.
At NYU, for example, graduates of the full-time, part-time, and executive MBA program are eligible to receive up to $15,000 a year in loan-repayment assistance if they work for a B Corp.
Alumni of both NYU and Yale are eligible for the program as long as they graduated within the last 10 years.
4) Save Money
The B Corp certification process is a great benchmark to help you identify ways to save money. For example, the B Impact Assessment looks at your energy efficiency, supply chain efficiency, worker benefits, training programs, job flexibility, corporate culture, and health and safety.
There are also a variety of service partnerships and discounts offered to certified B Corps. In 2011, for example, B Corps saved a collective $2 million by taking advantage of discounts offered by organizations like Sales force, Net suite, Intuit, and Care2.com.
5) Reduce Risk
B Corp certification helps you stay in compliance with strict new regulations such as California's AB 1103 and the SF Commercial Benchmarking Ordinance.
Now that Wal-Mart has a zero waste goal, McDonald's has fair-trade coffee, and Coca-Cola is using plant-based bottles, "green" has become an expectation for many industries. B Corp certification helps ensure that you remain innovative and stay ahead of the competition.

Miss Hawaii Pageant Planting Legacy Trees
|
The Miss Hawaii Organization, along with Miss Aloha Hawaii Sofia Godinez-Miller, Miss Kaua'i Alexandra Roth, Miss Oahu Brittni Woodward, Miss Garden Isle Lei U'i Kaholokua, and Miss Kona Coffee Guinevere Davenport participated in a day-long tree planting event. These young women planted indigenous koa trees as gifts to be presented my Miss Hawaii Crystal Lee to each of the other 52 Miss America contestants in Atlantic City, NJ this September. "These trees will not only be presented as living legacy gifts of aloha to each of the contestants, but the carbon that each of these trees sequester will help offset the carbon output of each contestant's travel and lodging for the Miss America Pageant", said Ms. Lee.
