The Scoop
June 2013 | Edition 15

Greetings!

Last week, I came across a TED talk by volunteer firefighter  Mark Bezos who spoke about his "aha" moment in volunteering.  In his closing remarks, he noted that
"not every day is going to offer us a chance to save somebody's life. But every day offers us an opportunity to affect one."

In the spirit of Mark's great line, this month's newsletter focuses on making a difference. From our work in announcing the  2013 Torchlight Prize winners (community volunteers affecting change in remarkable ways), to our newest it Award winner, the Washington Animal Rescue League, a kick off event for Community Profits Montgomery, and an annual conference dedicated to the topic of volunteering and service, we have plenty to remind us that every day we can affect lives, one by one.

Keep reading, and find your own inspiration along the way.

Community Profits Montgomery Kicks Off
In late 2012, C.Fox  Communications and Bethesda Magazine launched Community Profits Montgomery, a new initiative that recognizes Montgomery County businesses that give back to the community.

Last month, we brought together members of the initiative and other local businesses to talk about the critical role of business giving in Montgomery County. The event featured a panel discussion, moderated by Vanessa Small of The Washington Post, with Seth Goldman of Honest Tea, Nancy Fax of Pasternak & Fidis, Steve Hull of Bethesda Magazine, and Anna Hargrave of The Community Foundation for Montgomery County.

Vanessa Small (left) and panelists listen as Anna Hargrave gives an overview of the state of giving and the need in Montgomery County.
