Greetings in the
Year of the Horse!

Dear Epala Friends & Family;

Few of you have escaped the amazing and dramatic weather we've experienced this winter.  Here at the Epala® Ranch, the bitter cold and bone rattling wind chill is common place now.  Waking up to minus 20 and minus 30 degrees is the new normal. We dress as if we work at the South Pole to go out and do morning chores which take twice as long because we can barley move under layers and layers of down, wool, turtlenecks and long undies.  And yet, with the bitter comes the beautiful.  The snow shimmers as if angels have sneezed diamond dust across the landscape.  The sky is a color blue that has no word to describe it and every sound is amplified; the crunching sound of a hoof as it finds footing on the single track trails out in the deeply drifted pastures, the snort from a muzzle that leaves visible mist that lingers as if wondering where to go and the rifle-like crack of yet another tree limb too weary to hold, any longer, the weight of a snow load meant for mountains not pines.

We've watched to Epala® herd adapt and become accustomed to these extremes in a way only eons of surviving and thriving can explain.  They know to turn their thickly frosted eyelashes to the morning sun.  They know that when standing still in hibernation mode becomes unbearably boring, a nudge on a wither or a nip on a behind will eventually lead to an explosion of running, rearing and kicking snow games - up and over the hill, around the sheds and back to the water tank.  They know the extra carrot or chunk of apple or warmed beet pulp is meant to offer something special in very special conditions and they know the hay is endless - always present, always fresh and always promising a warm belly as the nighttime temps begin to fall.

I hope each of you have been thriving in the extremes of your life - like the Epala® herd - still finding the joy in the moment, the beauty of the unexpected and the absolute perfection of Mother Nature.  I am so excited to share with you in this newsletter the highlights of Epala® 2014. In April we will return for our fourth year at the Midwest Horse Fair® in Madison, Wisconsin and the Minnesota Horse Expo in St. Paul, Minnesota. In May I will be presenting at the Healing with Horses Festival and Symposium in Denver, Colorado. In addition, we will be starting 3 new Epala® Year-Long Apprenticeship Certification courses as well as offering an exciting line-up of workshops and clinics both in Hayward, Wisconsin and around the country.

Thank you always for your support.  Thank you for striving to understand what it really means to be in partnership with horses and knowing that it is through our relationships with them that we can learn to not only survive, but thrive; no matter the extremes that come blowing in our direction.

The Personality Archetypes of Horsemanship

As spring approaches you will be pulling out the curry and the brush to say bye-bye to winter coats and hello to spring riding and fun with your horse. But before you set your 2014 intentions for your partnership with your horse - whether going to horse shows or trail riding or just hanging our and having fun - make sure you have read
The Personality Archetypes of Horsemanship so you can understand how your personality impacts your relationship with your horse.  Are you a Warrior, a Healer, a Hunter, or a Keeper?  Do you carry Shaman energy?  What is the light and shadow side of your relationship with your horse?  I share all of this and so much more and would be honored to have you explore this book.  You can find the book on the Epala® website atwww.epala.org  so grab one today and head to the barn or to the pasture with the book in hand to read for you and your horse!
