Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

Osteopathic therapy is a form of treating patients body as a unit of body, mind and spirit.  Body structure and internal function are  interrelated; and the body has self-healing properties.  The Osteopathic physician is trained to evaluate the difference between a purely structural abnormality and a structural abnormality that is being caused by an underlying internal problem. For example, a structural abnormality found on physical exam, such as a tight muscle or a rib that is slightly out of place, may be due to a minor trauma or just improper posture in front of the computer.  However, it may also be due to irritation caused by a cancer or inflamed organ deep within the body. The Osteopathic therapist is trained to tell the difference and is well versed in ways to treat the underlying cause and promote overall health.

4. Find a release valve for your stress.

5. Avoid pesticides and "xeno-estrogens".

6. Exercise regularly forever!

7. Try self-massage for the breasts.

8. Remember monthly breast self-examination.

11.  Get professional treatment for benign breast diseases.

Maintaining Breast Health Through Regular Self-massage

These simple techniques can make a difference!

  1. Begin by gently massaging any lumps within the breasts for 10 minutes.
  2. Then press and knead the center of the breastbone between the nipples. This is acupuncture point Shan Zhong (Conception Vessel 17). It regulates all the qi in the body and especially chest and breast qi. It also calms the spirit. Do this 100-200 times.
  3. Next, knead the underarms with the tips of the fingers of opposite hand, first one underarm and then the other. Do this 100 times on each side. Three important acupuncture channels or meridians flow through this area under the arm and it is also an important area for lymphatic drainage. Then push the breasts with both palms simultaneously. Push lightly from every side of the breasts towards the nipples for two or three minutes on each side.
  4. Rub the breasts lightly in circles. First rub the circles from the outside to the inside. Then reverse directions and rub from inside to outside. Repeat this movement until the breasts feel warm.
  5. Rub the sides of the chest from the armpits downward to the center of the upper abdomen. Do this until these areas feel warm.
  6. Finally, rub the abdomen in a circle in a clockwise direction around the navel for approximately five minutes.

Breast Cancer:  Surpassing Recovery!

A common problem associated with breast cancer
Brook Longobardi, CYI
surgery recovery  is the loss of range of motion in the shoulder blade (scapula) and a shrinking of the muscles in the front of the chest.

A consistant yoga practice;  two to three times a week, with special attention to these "frozen" areas can benefit the body in the following ways:

1)  Increase range of motion
2)  Reduce or eliminate pain
3)  Regain strength
4)  Improve posture to better than before diagnosis
5)  BONUS:  Calm & Center Your Mind

Alternative Therapy provides an emotionally as well as physically safe atmosphere were classes taught by certified professional; Brook Longobardi.  The classes are small to provide an intimate atmosphere and more one-on-one attention.

Wherever you practice, insist on a certified instructor, for your own safety!
The group class schedule is on the left hand column.  Private classes are available by appointment or gather your own group of three and create your personal "group" yoga class.  For more information call 941-727-1500
