Three Steps to
Jump Start Your Weight Loss!

1. Make a Plan
- The old quote "Failing to plan is planning to fail" holds very true for weight loss.  Knowing your weaknesses and planning strategies to help get you through the temptations
is key to success.  

In the book 
 Switch; How to Make Change When Change is Hard by the Heath brothers they report on new research indicating we have 2 minds; an emotional one and a rational one.  The image they put forth in the book is of a tiny Elephant Girlrational driver trying to control the big emotional elephant. In a contest of wills the rational driver soon wears down and the elephant goes back to its old comforts. We have to design strategies and plans to keep the elephant on track.

2. Handle Your Stress

has been shown to put on the pounds and they are the bad ones around the middle of the torso, creating the apple shape which is a risk for heart disease.  There are numerous activities like aerobics, walking or running, yoga or tai chi, and practices like meditation which can help the body and mind restore itself.

Prevent, Arrest and Reverse Osteoporosis
Did you know Research has shown that yoga can prevent or slow -- and in some cases even reverse -- the process of bone loss?  In addition to the gentle workout and stress reduction, the compression of the muscle-to-bone in yoga asanas have been shown to stimulate bone growth. 

One in three women over 50 experience osteoporosis, with many taking pharmaceuticals with dangerous side effects such as gastrointestinal problems, throat or chest pain, difficulty swallowing, heartburn, abnormal heart rhythm (atrial fibrillation), incapacitating bone, joint, and muscle pain; and bone loss in the jaw (osteonecrosis). Some evidence suggests long-term use of the most commonly prescribed drug may actually increase the risk of a certain type of fracture.

WHY RISK IT? Join a yoga class that teaches Iyengar style, alignment based yoga.  Gym or health clubs with yoga classes often have teachers that are not certified in yoga and can sometimes be dangerous, as the classes are large and there is little individual attention.  A smaller classe, with a teacher that is able to cue each student in using the correct muscles and alignment for each pose, is ideal.
