Spring 2015 Friends and Family Membership Recruitment Campaign Extended
Vickie and granddaughter Diamond - keeping SOCM in the family
In May, in honor of our 43rd birthday, we announced our Spring 2015 Friends and Family Membership Recruitment Campaign - with a goal of recruiting 86 new members (that's 2 new members for every year of our 43 years).

Since the start of the campaign, 27 members have been recruited!

Our members are doing a great job - like long-time member Vickie Terry who has worked with SOCM over the years to end mountaintop removal in Campbell County.

Vickie recorded her story for SOCM and StoryCorps in 2010, and spoke about the legacy she wanted to leave for her children and grandchildren. Listen to Vickie's story here.  Vickie recruited her granddaughter Diamond (who was eleven at that time), who shared Vickie's passion on the issues affecting them, to join the march on the Zeb Mountain and to lobby in DC.  Together Vickie and Diamond have now recruited Vickie's daughter April, making this a family of three generations who are continuing the work in fighting for justice in their communities.

And like our Knoxville Chapter members, Daniel, Flo and Travis who have asked that we extend our campaign deadline so that they can continue recruiting more friends and family.

As a way of thanking them, and encouraging them to continue the good work, we are extending our campaign.

The rules are simple - join or renew your membership and start recruiting! The members who recruit the most new members will receive a prize (generously donated by a SOCM member). First place prize is a $100 visa gift card, second place prize is a $50 visa gift card and third place prize is a $25 visa gift card.

The new deadline is July 27th, and the winners will be announced on August 3rd.
SOCM needs your help to make this the best recruitment campaign ever and to help SOCM grow so that we can continue to make positive change in communities across Tennessee.

Watch for updates on the campaign on our Facebook page, Twitter feed and on our website (where you can watch members, Shelby Wright and Micah-Sage Bolden, talk about the reasons they joined SOCM together).

You can give securely at socm.org or call us at 865-249-7488 to make a donation over the phone. You can also send a check to:

Other Ways You Can Give to SOCM

We also have a number of other ways you can give to SOCM.

Community Shares We are a long-time member of Community Shares Tennessee.

Many employers are signed up to the Community Shares program. Community Shares gives you the convenience of donating through payroll deduction, with any amount you choose, as often as you like or through a one-time donation. This allows you to easily budget and track your contributions, and even remain anonymous if you prefer. You will receive a verification letter for your donations, and all donations are tax deductible.

To donate to SOCM through Community Shares, speak with your Payroll department who can help you sign up.  If your employer isn't a participant in Community Shares, encourage them to contact Community Shares and sign up today.

If you shop at Kroger (grocery or gas), please register your Kroger Plus Shopper's Card with the Kroger Community Rewards Program, select SOCM Resource Project (89484) as your organization of choice, and 4% of your purchases will go to SOCM just by swiping your rewards card. Sign up  at www.kroger.com/communityrewards.

SOCM has been nominated by members and has registered for the AmazonSmile Foundations's Amazon Smile program. Now, when you shop at Amazon (through the Amazon Smile link), the AmazonSmile Foundation will donate 0.5% of the purchase price from your eligible AmazonSmile purchases. The purchase price is the amount paid for the item minus any rebates, excluding shipping & handling, gift-wrapping fees, taxes, or service charges.

This is a convenient and easy way to make your Amazon purchases go farther and give to SOCM at the same time, so please register today.

Community Shares has been awarded both local and universal giving "eligible organization" status with the Tennessee Regional Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) for 2015.  As a member of Community Shares, this means that SOCM can also participate in the program.

CFC is the world's largest and most successful annual workplace charity campaign, with almost 200 CFC campaigns throughout the country and overseas raising millions of dollars each year. Pledges made by Federal civilian, postal and military donors during the campaign season (September 1 to December 15) support eligible non-profit organizations that provide health and human service benefits throughout the world. The Tennessee Regional CFC covers 55 counties in Middle and West Tennessee and reaches over 15,000 federal employees.

Because Community Shares holds both local (Tennessee) and "Universal Giving" status, Federal employees across the United States and overseas can donate to Community Shares.

If you, a friend or family member are a Federal civilian, postal or military employee, there are a number of ways you can pledge and donate to SOCM via Community Shares. Please go to the Tennessee Regional CFC website to learn how

SOCM Regional Media Training Days
SOCM members learn new skills

Got a great story for The SOCM Sentinel, the

E-news or our blog but not sure how to go about writing it?

Want to learn how to "Facebook" with other SOCM members and grow your chapter or committee?

Ever sent a tweet?   Know your photos or videos would be great for SOCM but need just that little bit of help knowing how to edit them?

Wondered how to write a letter to the editor or talk to a local journalist?

Come along to one of our upcoming regional media trainings on the first two Saturdays in June.  All sessions are free (including meals).

Long-time member Boomer Winfrey will teach us about what a story is and how to tell is,  how to put messages together, how to write press releases, letters to the editor, developing relationships with reporters and being a spokesperson.

Community Media Organizing Project Coordinator, William Isom, will lead us in one-to-one and small group sessions on new / social media.  Long-time member Cathie Bird will help in the new / social media sessions in Knoxville with how to use Facebook, Twitter and SOCM's blog to promote your chapter, committee and SOCM's work.  In the Murfreesboro sessions, new member Matt Ferry will teach us how to take and edit videos to help tell our story in a more visual way.

At the end of the day, Boomer will lead us all in a media event / PR campaign exercise that will let us put all that we've learned into action so that we can take it back to our chapter or committee and plan our next PR campaign.

Our June 6th training will be held at MTSU in Murfreesboro (9am-6pm CDT) and you can sign up for that here.

Our June 13th training will be held at the CWA Union Hall, 1415 Elm Street, Knoxville (9am - 6pm EDT), and you can sign up for that here.

If you're not a SOCM member and are interested in attending, you can sign up as a SOCM member and pay your dues on the day. We are offering limited membership dues reduction for these events.

For more information, please contact SOCM at info@socm.org or call 865-249-7488.

Knoxville Chapter World Environment Day Celebration

SOCM celebrates community unity
On Sunday, June 21st SOCM's Knoxville Chapter and the Birdhouse Knoxville (the Fourth and Gill Neighborhood Center) will co-host a World Environment Day (WED) Celebration.

WED, held every year on June 5th, is an annual United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) event that is held to raise global awareness of the need to take positive environmental action. It is the climax of environmental activities being undertaken all year round by UNEP and other organizations and individuals around the world.

This year's UNEP theme is "7 Billion Dreams", with our celebration's theme being "Why your environmental footprint matters -  African and American experiences."

The celebration will be hosted at the Birdhouse, located at 800 N 4th Avenue, Knoxville, as part of their Sunday Supper series.  There will be a potluck supper, starting at 6:00 p.m. EDT, and the program will begin at 7:00 p.m.  Members and guests are encouraged to bring along a potluck item.

Knoxville Chapter member and Board representative, Drocella Mugorewera, will be the guest speaker and our Board President, Patrick Morales, will MC the event. Drocella is a former member of the Rwandan Parliament and was Rwandan Minister of Land, Environment, Forestry, Water and Mines. She has a unique perspective to contribute to the environmental discussion, and will be on hand to answer questions.

The celebration will feature works of art and literature from area young people, as well as spoken word and music from local artists.  We encourage any members interested in showcasing artwork or literature during the celebration to contact us as soon as possible.

We will also have an auction which will include items from Rwanda, Madagascar and closer to home.

The Knoxville Chapter identified environmental education as one of its priority issues. Being a part of the celebration gives us an opportunity to share our ideas and activities for making our world cleaner, greener and brighter. We hope to make this an annual event.

If you are interested in attending, please contact Community Organizer, Adam Hughes at adam@socm.org or call 865-249-7488.
