Spring 2015 Friends and Family Membership Recruitment Campaign
Join SOCM or renew your membership today!
SOCM is proud to announce our Spring 2015 Friends and Family Membership Recruitment Campaign!

In honor of our 43rd birthday this year, we are holding a campaign during the month of May to recruit 86 new members (that's 2 for every year of our 43 years).

We are a statewide member-run grassroots community organization - it's fair to say that SOCM is our members and our members are SOCM.  Our members have accomplished amazing things over our 43 years, and we know they will accomplish many more in the years to come.

New members Shelby Wright and Micah-Sage Bolden joined SOCM earlier this year (and came on board as interns not long after). To help us kick off this campaign, they told us why they felt it was important to join SOCM together, and they explain how you can participate.

The rules are simple - join or renew your membership and start recruiting! The members who recruit the most new members will receive a prize (generously donated by a SOCM member).  First place prize is a $100 visa gift card, second place prize is a $50 visa gift card and third place prize is a $25 visa gift card.

The deadline is May 25th and the winners will be announced on June 1st.

Shelby says, "Right now is a crucial time for Tennessee. From primacy to the fight for public education, from local corruption to water quality, SOCM stands on the front lines in the fight for social, economic and environmental justice, and with SOCM ramping up our efforts in 2015, we need all the new and renewing friends and family we can get!"

Be sure to watch for updates on the campaign on our website, our Facebook page and our Twitter feed.  You can also watch Shelby and Micah-Sage's video on YouTube.
Or contact SOCM directly for more information by emailing us at info@socm.org or calling 865-249-7488.

We're looking forward to a great year and to having you be a part of it!

Cumberland County Sustainability Fair

SOCM's table at a previous Cumberland County Sustainability Fair
SOCM's Cumberland County members are busy as bees!  On Thursday, May 14th, the Cumberland Chapter will host a display at the County Sustainability Fair on the pollinators of Tennessee.  We'll discuss wasps, flies, butterflies, birds, and bats, but the highlight will be a live bee exhibition, brought to us by a professional beekeeper.  You may even get to see some of our members in costume!

SOCM's exhibit will be one of forty different groups at the fair, which will be attended by every 5th grader in the county.

The fair will be held at the Crossville Community Complex, 398 Livingston Rd, Crossville, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. central time.

Be sure to stop by and say hello to our members, learn about our Tennessee pollinators and how they're vital to our environment, and catch up on the work SOCM is doing in Cumberland County.

Social Justice Committee Prepares for May 23rd Statewide Meeting

SOCM members Scott Martindale and Dylan Ross, along with allies, speak at SOCM/USAS Education Panel Event at MTSU in May
On Wednesday, April 22nd, SOCM's Social Justice Committee (SJC) teamed up with United Students against Sweatshops (USAS) on the campus of Middle Tennessee State University to co-host a public forum on public education.  The event supported the SJC's work, along with our allies, on defending public education, particularly around the need for greater transparency and accountability for charter schools, teachers workplace rights, increasingly rigid test-based curriculums in schools, and university corporatization, among other things.

The SJC is now gearing up for its next statewide face-to-face meeting which will be held on Saturday, May 23rd in Cookeville (check back soon on our website and Facebook page for exact location).

The SJC now has local groups in Knoxville and Nashville organizing on the ground to protect and strengthen public education in Tennessee.

SJC members hope to use this upcoming statewide gathering to grow the committee and further develop our strategy. All SOCM members are encouraged to join the SJC and attend this statewide gathering.

For more information on attending the SJC statewide meeting or joining the SJC, please contact SJC Chair Dylan Ross at socialijustice@socm.org.

*SOCM filmed this event, and we'll have it uploaded to YouTube soon for you to view - so stay tuned!
