Amendment 3 Will Lead To:- More Sales Tax Hikes: Tennessee already has the highest sales tax in the nation at 9.45% on average and as high as 9.75% in some counties. By cutting off other revenue options, Amendment 3 will force Tennessee families to shoulder further hikes in the sales tax, and soon, a double-digit rate.
- Higher Prices for Food & Clothing: Higher sales taxes will push the cost of food, clothing and other everyday needs to record highs. Currently, the average family of four in Tennessee spends $300 more a year on basic food staples than the average family in neighboring Georgia. Amendment 3 will lead to higher food prices and place a greater burden on Tennessee families and seniors.
- Hurting Low-Income Tennesseans: Unlike working families who spend most of their incomes on taxable groceries and other necessities, higher-income households spend much of their income on private schools, housecleaning service, attorney fees, and investments where the sales tax does not apply. Amendment 3 will ensure that working Tennesseans shoulder an unfair share of taxes for generations to come.
- Damaging Cuts: The exodus of shoppers avoiding Tennessees highest-in-the-nation sales tax drives chronic budget shortfalls and deep budget cuts to K-12 education, parks, community services and senior programs that further stifles the economy. Amendment 3 will undercut critical support for working families.
- Slow Job Growth: The exodus of shoppers also hurts local retailers and cost jobs. Over the past decade, Tennessees job creation rate of 4.6% ranks behind every neighboring state. Amendment 3 will push more shoppers across state lines and cost us jobs.
