Save the Date for Public Meetings on Tennessee's Proposed Solid Waste Plan

The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) is hosting its second round of public participation in the process for developing the 2015-2025 Statewide Integrated Solid Waste and Materials Management Plan. This plan will determine how the state handles solid waste, including recyclable materials and hazardous waste.

It is incredibly important that they hear from us! There hasn't been much opportunity for public input thus far, and not a single meeting has been held in an area directly-affected by landfills.

Please try to attend one of the following meetings, if possible, or submit written comments to solid.waste@tn.govMore information, including talking points, will be coming from SOCM's E3 Committee in the coming days. In the meantime, you can familiarize yourself with the process by visiting the plan's site.

Public Hearing for New Proposed Surface Mine in Claiborne County
Tuesday, May 6th at 6 p.m. ET
TDEC Knoxville Field Office, 3711 Middlebrook Pike

We need SOCM members to pack the house! Kopper Glo mining wants state permission to open a new strip mine (Clear Fork surface mine) in Claiborne County. As with any strip mine, this new mine would be detrimental to the surrounding people and environment. The steams in Claiborne County regularly show high levels of conductivity (bad for fish and aquatic life) as a result of the mining-related pollutants already in the area. And, as SOCM members have been pointing out for 40+ years, Kopper Glo and other coal companies don't produce real economic returns or social benefits for the communities they operate in, mostly high-poverty areas with poor infrastructure.

Help stop this process for allowing a new strip mine in this area already devastated by mining by attending the public hearing and submitting formal comments to TDEC. You can speak at the hearing or send in comments to the permit writer at Gary.Mullins@tn.gov, or
