Rally on the Capitol for Living Wage Jobs, Public Education, Democracy
Tuesday, March 11 at Noon
The Capitol, Nashville

On Tuesday, March 11th, SOCM members and our allies will gather on the steps at the State Capitol in Nashville to demand jobs that pay a livable wage, defend public education and robust state financing of public schools at all levels, and let Nashville know that propositions to outlaw picketing and campaigns that bring community pressure to bad businesses is unacceptable.

SOCM Organizer Brad Wright is setting up appointments with legislators prior to the rally at noon. To see the bills that SOCM is lobbying on this year, please visit the Legislative Page of our website. ALL SOCM MEMBERS ARE INVITED TO ATTEND THESE MEETINGS WITH LEGISLATORS.

Click here to RSVP for the rally. Email Brad if you would like to participate in meetings with legislators in the morning.

A bus is coming from Knoxville and stopping in Cookeville. Make sure to RSVP to reserve a space on the bus.

On Feb. 18th, SOCM members participated in Conservation Education Day at the State Capitol. They met with three members of the Senate Education Committee to discuss our opposition to the School Voucher Bill right before the Committee meeting. Help Needed on Issues Committees

Our Issues Committees are an important piece of SOCM's structure. Committees identify and work on issues that affect SOCM members statewide and provide specialized assistance to chapters working on local issues.

Right now, each of our Issues Committees are in the process of mapping out campaigns that will address real threats to our state. WE NEED YOUR HELP. If you are looking to expand your knowledge on a topic, learn how to use community organizing to win big, and (most importantly) make an impact in your community, please join a SOCM Issues Committee.

E3 Committee Trains Members to Test Water in Middle Tennessee

On February 22nd, SOCM Board President Patrick Morales and E3 Committee Chair Stephanie Langley hosted a Water Quality Testing Training in Murfreesboro. This is the first training the committee has done in Middle Tennessee as part of the ACE (Appalachian Citizen Enforcement) Project. Members in Middle Tennessee are facing threats to water quality from landfills, manufacturing plants, concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs), and poor infrastructure. Several members from Maury County were in attendance and now have another tool to use in their campaign for clean and affordable water in Mt. Pleasant. Rutherford County members can now use the meters to test the water around their local landfill, Mt. Trashmore.

The Appalachian Community Enforcement Project is a project of the Alliance for Appalachia, its member organizations, and other local and regional groups. Through partnerships in coal-impacted communities, Project participants monitor surface water quality and pursue Clean Water Act enforcement in order to protect the people and places of Central Appalachia.

The E3 Committee will host another training, in conjunction with ally groups, in East Tennessee on March 22nd. RSVP to Stephanie at e3@socm.org if you would like to attend.
