Save the Date for
SOCM's Annual Meeting and Walk-a-Thon
Saturday, October 26th
Cumberland Mountain State Park
We're so pleased to announce that plans for our annual meeting are underway! This year we'll be at Cumberland Mountain State Park in Crossville.
Logistical details and an agenda are all currently being worked out so keep your eyes and ears open for more information in the coming weeks. In the meantime, save the date!
In the afternoon, we'll be taking a short break to enjoy the beauty of the park and raise money for our social, economic, and environmental justice work. We're hoping for one of our biggest Walks for Justice ever with all of our Annual Meeting attendees participating. Our Walk for Justice brings in several thousand dollars to SOCM every year and is always a good time to enjoy the company of fellow members. Even when members can't get together to walk, we see them walking around their neighborhoods, in their backyards, on hiking trails, and even "rocking for justice" in rocking chairs on their front porches! So remember, even if you can't walk with us in Crossville, you can still raise money for SOCM. Send us a photo of your walk location and you could be featured in the next SOCM Sentinel.
You can print a pledge sheet for the Walk-a-Thon here. Or you can contact Kathy Nix at kathy@socm.org or 865-249-7488 if you want one mailed to you.

Concerned About Environmental Threats in our State?
This month, there are two opportunities for SOCM members to go on record with their concerns about local resource extraction methods.
informal Conference on Turner Surface Mine
At 6/5 p.m. CT on Thursday, September 12th, the Office of Surface Mining (OSM) will host an informal conference regarding the permit renewal for Crossville Coal's Turner Surface Mine in Cumberland County. The Turner Surface Mine is adjacent to the Catoosa Wildlife Management Area. Currently, Crossville Coal is in talks with the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) to lease the mineral rights under Catoosa for underground coal mining. This would be the first time the State of Tennessee would lease mineral rights for resource extraction on protected public land that is designated for conservation and recreation. SOCM members will be using the public comment session at this informal conference to talk about the potential permit application for mining under the Catoosa, weaknesses of mining regulations, public land being used for resource extraction, and the economic and social impacts of mining. If you are interested in attending the conference and would like some help preparing comments, please contact Parker Laubach at parker@socm.org or 865-249-7488 for more information or talking points.
The conference will be held in O'Brien Room 101 at Roane State Community College. The address for the college is 276 Patton Lane in Harriman, Tennessee.
Public Hearing on Sterling & Strays Surface Mine
On September 24th, SOCM members will be attending a Public Hearing with the Office of Surface Mining (OSM), Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC), U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and Army Corps of Engineers (COE) regarding Appolo Fuels' proposed Sterling & Strays surface mine in Claiborne County. Appolo Fuels has applied for a permit to strip mine 804.8 acres in Claiborne County. This area has already been extensively mined, resulting in extremely poor water quality and the likely extinction of the Blackside dace, a fish that lives in Straight Creek, which is just to the west of the proposed mine. Moreover, the proposed mine is immediately upstream from the proposed Cooper Ridge Surface Mine which, if approved, would remove nearly 1,500 acres of mountaintop. Allowing the construction of two surface mines in the same area to move forward would be exponentially negative on the water quality in the area. The streams that would be affected by these mines flow into the Clear Fork of the Cumberland River.
The Hearing on September 24th will be held at TDEC's Knoxville Environmental Field Office (3711 Middlebrook Pike). It starts at 6 p.m. For carpool information or other questions contact Organizer Parker Laubach at 865-249-7488 or by email parker@socm.org.

Knoxville Chapter Plans Events Around Food Access and Urban Forestry This Month
Knoxville residents and visitors, there's a chance to participate in two free community awareness events this month. Come meet members of the Knoxville Chapter who are passionate about increasing access to healthy food and protecting urban trees!
"A Place at the Table" Screening
On Saturday, September 21st, at 4pm, the Knoxville Chapter will be joining other community members to watch a documentary film screening of "A Place at the Table" at the University Center at the University of Tennessee campus in Knoxville. The movie will be followed by a panel and discussion of what we can do to improve hunger problems in Knoxville.

"A Place at the Table" follows three families struggling with food insecurity: Barbie, a single mother who grew up in poverty and is trying to provide a better life for her two children; Rosie, a fifth-grader who often depends on friends and neighbors to feed her and has trouble concentrating in school; and Tremonica, a second-grader who suffers from asthma, obesity and related health issues, which are exacerbated by the poor quality of the food her hard-working mother can provide. Knoxville Chapter members have been working with other community groups on food access and food security issues this year and will continue with the campaign into next year. Invite your friends on Facebook!
Guided Bicycle Tree Tour
The Knoxville Chapter is hosting another tree tour - this time we'll be enjoying the changing fall colors of Knoxville's notable trees while on bikes! The tour will be leading up to Knoxville's 100th Conservation Expo. Our guide for the afternoon is Kasey Krouse, Urban Forrester for the City of Knoxville. The tour is Sunday, September 29th. We will meet at The Birdhouse (800 N. Fourth Ave.) at 2 p.m. RSVP to Katie Greer at 865-249-7488 or katie@socm.org.

TVA Board Hears Concerns from the Community on Solar
During the listening session of the August 22nd TVA Board meeting, solar small business employees and owners, SOCM members, and friends spoke on the problem with TVA's new yearly cap on solar applications. Solar companies are now required to complete all their business within a small window of time each year. When TVA opened up a window for new solar interconnection applications on Aug 1st, the 2.5 MW cap was gone in 60 seconds (really!). Companies who were not accepted this round (most of them) will have to wait months and then try again. The demand for solar is higher than it has ever been and solar companies can't make these sales when there's no way to interconnect with our utility grid. We asked the Board to consider the true value of solar, explained how this is constraining business, and compared TVA to neighboring utilities who have stronger solar targets. Mary Mastin, Tennessee Environmental Council board member and Sierra Club and SOCM member, presented board members with a letter detailing our ask and signed by many organizations including SOCM. During this same meeting, the Board approved $3.3 billion to be spent on the Gallatin coal plant and Watts Bar 2 nuclear plant. We think this money can be better invested in cleaner, renewable energy sources so our Green-Collar Jobs Committee will continue to pressure TVA. Contact Katie Greer, 865-249-7488 or katie@socm.org, to get involved.
