Mt. Pleasant Residents Now Paying MORE for Water They Still Don't Drink
Tell the Mayor of Mt. Pleasant to Bring SOCM to the Table

SOCM members in Mt. Pleasant are at the height of their campaign for clean and affordable water and they need your help.

Throughout the last year, members have been working with their neighbors and meeting with city and state officials to address problems with the water quality in Mt. Pleasant and the unaffordable water and sewer rates that are plaguing residents. They have continuously been met with intimidation and broken commitments.

Most recently, the City Commission called a special meeting (in lieu of its regular meeting) on June 27th to pass higher water and sanitation rates. Many residents had planned to attend the regular meeting to voice their concerns about the higher rates and were shocked to learn the vote had already taken place. Changing meeting dates at the last minute ensures less public input and gives the impression of being secretive.

Mt. Pleasant residents are asking for help from SOCM members in putting pressure on Mt. Pleasant Mayor Maury Colvett to show cooperation on behalf of the city. A letter has been sent to Mayor Colvett and members will be following up with phone calls. Please contact Mayor Colvett to say:

  1. SOCM members and residents need cooperation from local officials and a seat at the table where decisions are being made about clean and safe drinking water, and sewer and water rates. Changing meeting schedules and shutting out the public from this process is not the way to solve Mt. Pleasant's problems.
  2. The non-cooperative attitude and inflammatory remarks made by City Manager Michelle Williams only exacerbates the situation. Williams is quoted in a newspaper article calling SOCM "fraudulent" and as having "ulterior motives." She also threatened SOCM staff members with lawsuits.
  3. Please join Mt. Pleasant SOCM members at their August 12th meeting for a working discussion on addressing these problems.
