Knoxville Chapter Hosts Granddaddy Tree Tour as part of Tree Preservation Campaign
Saturday, June 1, 2013
Tours Begin at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Knoxville Chapter members have been hard at work planning a public awareness campaign around urban tree preservation. Please join us for a tour of Knoxville's arboreal gems led by Kasey Krouse (Urban Forester for the City of Knoxville) and Brian Campbell (Director of Horticulture for Knoxville Botanical GPink Dogwood Treearden and Arboretum). This two-hour van tour will highlight the largest, oldest, and most notable trees in and around downtown - many of which you may not have even noticed. Have you seen this Pink Dogwood (right) nestled in the Catholic Diocese of East Tennessee Catholic Cemetery? It has a circumference of over 80 inches! Come learn about local tree history, tree identification, the benefits of urban trees, and tree care.

Tours begin at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Glen Oak Missionary Baptist Church parking lot on the corner of West Glenwood and Folsom Avenue.

The tour is FREE but space is limited. Please contact Knoxville Organizer Katie Greer at 865-249-7488 or katie@socm.org to make a reservation.

Concerned about the Growing Threats to Our Water Supply? Join the E3 Committee

Are you concerned about the direction of water quality protection in Tennessee?  Have you seen the latest Tennessee Clean Water Network report on the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) that outlines a 50% decrease in enforcement actions over the last two years? Do you want to help contribute to the healing of our mountains and rivers, while helping prevent further destruction and degradation?

If you want to take action on issues such as water contamination or natural resource conservation, and you have a desire to keep Tennessee a beautiful place for future generations, there is a SOCM committee for you! Join the E3 (Energy, Ecology and Environmental Justice) Committee and work with some of the most experienced SOCM members who are actively involved with these issues. The E3 committee has been working on preventing fracking on public lands in Tennessee, surface mining at Zeb Mountain, and other threats to our air, land and water. Committee members also lend important technical knowledge support to local chapters on environmental issues.  If you are interested in becoming actively involved with the E3 Committee, contact Organizer Parker Laubach at parker@socm.org for more information or call the SOCM office at 865-249-7488.
Local Residents Press Officials for Relief at Mt. Pleasant Town Hall Meeting on Utilities

From www.socm.org:

In a community center full of concerned citizens, city officials, and representatives from the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC), the state Comptroller's office, and the State Department of Health, Mt. Pleasant residents were finally given a space to publicly question officials about the heavy burden of sewer rates (over $50 per month base rate) and the persistent concerns about the quality of the town's drinking water. As the city-sponsored Town Hall on Public Utilities drew to a close on the night of April 25th, SOCM member Imogene Conger stood to ask a fundamental question, "why are the people of Mt. Pleasant paying for all these past mistakes we didn't make? And where is the relief for us?"

On Valentine's Day, SOCM members delivered nearly 100 water quality complaint forms to TDEC with a valentine.

After a 45-minute presentation from city officials, SOCM member Mickie Cannon took the microphone to say, "The only thing I got out of this meeting is that we've got 15 more years of imprisonment to bills I can't afford." SOCM members Joycelene Johns, Gloria Jordan and other local citizens raised repeated questions about the fluctuation and inconsistency of sewer and water charges from house to house and from month to month. Johns also made the economic argument, noting that passing expenses on to residents "is not smart, because people are moving out." Mt. Pleasant City Manager Michelle Williams was apologetic, but asserted that "the city is a business." Johns responded that businesses should not be privileged over the residents of the town.

The Maury County Chapter will meet in Mt. Pleasant on Tuesday, May 7th, at 6:30 pm, and the meeting will include an informational session with residents dealing with lead contamination issue from the EPA's investigation of the old Industrial Products Company site in their neighborhood. The EPA will issue a report on that investigation in June, and will hold another public informational session at the Mt. Pleasant Community Center to coincide with its release.
