Colburn Shoe Store, the oldest shoe store in America
Colburn Shoe Store, the oldest shoe store in America
We want to begin this newsletter by telling you about the upcoming Saturday in Belfast. On Saturday, February 1, most of the downtown stores are offering great sales and incentives for you to shop downtown.

About fifteen years ago, Brian Horne of Colburn Shoe Store began an annual clearance sale on the first weekend of February. Three years ago we joined him and offered a sale; not a half-price sale, but we offered what we could. Two years ago, most of the businesses participated and so it appears that this is now an annual event! In a separate article below, there is a listing of the participating businesses with some including specifics of their sale.

We will be opening early, at 9 am, on Saturday, with 20% off all day. If you have a prior obligation on Saturday, please come in on Sunday and mention the sale, and we will give you the discount.

Now you have so many reasons to spend Saturday in Belfast!

Books, Magazines and Patterns on Sale
This month we are offering all current magazines on sale at 20% off. All Yankee Knitter patterns, Pure and Simple patterns, and books on the bookshelf are 20% off.

We will be culling our book offerings once again -- probably for the last time -- and with a few exceptions, the knitting books we will be offering in the future are knitting reference books, Maine authors and books that contain patterns that are currently unavailable on Ravelry.

Therefore we will have a table full of books and back issues of magazines at 40% off! (These will not be discounted further on the February 1 Cabin Fever Sale day.) We will also have binders of patterns for $2.00 a pattern (values to $7.50). We welcome your input about the balance between carrying hard copies of patterns and books, and the electronic versions.
Sara's baby Margot
Sara's baby Margot
Welcome Cheryl and Baby Margot!
We welcome Cheryl Krause of Stockton Springs to the shop. She will be working regularly on Thursdays. Cheryl has many years of experience knitting, working in yarn shops, and teaching knitting skills.

Cheryl began working because Sara is taking the time to be home with Margot, who was born on January 8. She weighed 7 lbs., 11 oz., and was 20 3/4" long. We are happy to report that both mom and baby are doing well and staying warm in lots of cozy knits -- which Margot is already beginning to outgrow!
Bohemia Shawl, knit in Berroco's Cirrus and a metallic tape accent yarn
Bohemia Shawl, knit in Berroco's Cirrus and a metallic tape accent yarn
Bohemia Shawl
Helen was inspired to knit this easy neck shawl (or it can easily be made into a full-sized shawl) after seeing a customer's project in progress.  She knit hers in Cirrus, a mohair blend by Berroco that is airy and not itchy -- simply because she wanted to knit in a light-colored, "Spring" colorway. Because Cirrus is a lighter-weight gauge than used in the pattern, she knit on #11 needles and used a metallic tape yarn for accent.

The beauty of mohair is this: It is incredibly lightweight and can be very warm and cozy. It is perfect for a three-season accessory. Some people do not like wearing mohair because it is sometimes itchy. And we agree -- some mohair yarn lines are itchy and not soft at all! However, at the moment, we believe we have only soft mohairs in the shop and we encourage you to give them a try.

This project uses only about 200 yards (usually this means two 50-gram skeins) of a heavy mohair.  Many of us may even have this amount in our stash. Have fun using up stash by mixing up the accent yarn too!

Click Bohemia Shawl for the free pattern on Ravelry.
Farther-Flung February Fiber Fun
The Newport Spin-In
The Newport Spin-In will take place from 10 am-3 pm on Saturday, February 15, at the Newport Elementary School, 142 Elm St. (Rt. 2) in Newport, Maine. Price is $2.00 (it helps if you have dollar bills). Bring lunch, mug, your wheel or spindle, a chair, and, if you like, a baked good or "finger food" item to share. There will be show-and-tell, a used-equipment sale, a fiber swap and more. Vendors welcome ($12.00 table fee). Full details can be found at Maine Spinners Registry (click on Calendar) or phone Maureen at 207-474-9551, Leah at 207-474-0476 or Mary Ann at 207-654-3475.

Monthly Jackson Spinners Meeting
The Jackson Spinners are currently meeting on the third Tuesday of the month, at the Jackson Town Library in Jackson, Maine. This month's meeting is on February 18, 6:30 to 9 pm. The Jackson Town Library is located behind the new Jackson Fire Station, next to the Transfer Station, all of which is right on Route 7.

12th Annual Spa, Knit and Spin
The 12th Annual Spa, Knit and Spin will take place from Friday-Sunday, February 28-March 2, at the Hilton Inn, Freeport, Maine.

Hundreds of (mostly) women converge upon the Hilton and the Harraseeket hotels in Freeport, from Friday afternoon until Sunday mid-day. There is a meet-and-greet table for information on all the things going on. The participants spin and knit everywhere, in all the common areas of these hotels, where many people book rooms months in advance. There are large meeting rooms full of excellent vendors, a couple of dozen in the Hilton. Saturday evening there is a fantastic fashion show at the Harraseeket where dozens of participants parade their latest knit creations; it's fun and inspiring. There are door prizes. It really is not to be missed. People come from many states away for this event.

NETA's Yahoo group NewEnglandTextileArts is the best place to see the latest information and to download the vendor application. There is also information on NETA's blog and Twitter, or find them on Facebook. If you just want to visit when the vendors are set up that Saturday, that's great. No registration is necessary and there is no charge to attend. Come when you can, leave when you must.
4th Bangor Public Library Fiber Arts Exhibition
4th Bangor Public Library Fiber Arts Exhibition
4th Bangor Public Library Fiber Arts Exhibition
"Behind every good fiber artist is a book." Well, OK, many books. This is the premise underlying the 4th Fiber Arts Exhibition to be held in the Bangor Public Library on Saturday, February 22, from 10 am-3:30 pm. Whether you are looking for a new hobby, wanting to know which books the experts use, or just like gawking at beautiful handmade fiber art, come visit the library for a fun day!

Scattered throughout the library from the Lecture Hall to the Children's Room, 30+ area crafters will be demonstrating everything from rug hooking to basketry. Talk to the folks about how they got started and their special techniques. Bring the children to felt a ball, try their hand at knitting or just for a big dose of inspiration. There is something for adults and children alike, and plenty of new artists as well as old favorites.

The fiber arts represented at the exhibition include basketry, carding, embroidery, felting, fiber sculpture, historic doll costumes, knitting, locker hooking, quilting, rag rugs, rug hooking, shawl ministry, spinning and weaving.

For more information, phone Christy Coombs at the Library at 207-947-8336.

Exhibitions Opening and Live Music at Waterfall Arts
Two new shows open at Waterfall Arts on Friday, February 7, with a reception from 5 to 8 pm.

Library, a large installation by Abbie Read, graces the Clifford Gallery. Fresh from the 2013 Portland Biennial, and still expanding, Library covers an entire wall and then some. It is a dense three-dimensional wall collage of book art; you might find a glass vial embedded in an open book "box," or pages sown with seeds, all intricately packed in by colorful book covers. Read incorporates found objects to create ephemeral imagery, bringing poems or text passages to life. Visitors are encouraged to take their time perusing this library, which is open during office hours: Tuesday through Friday from 10 am to 5 pm, by chance or appointment.

Denizens, a group show by habitues of Waterfall Arts, will be on display in the Corridor Gallery during the same time period. Habitues include the art center's tenants, staff, instructors and volunteers who are also painters, photographers, printmakers, ceramicists and assemblage artists. The self-selected work celebrates the diversity of art made by the denizens of the building including Alison Rector, Mike Fletcher, Alan Crichton, Jaap Helder and others.

The Friday opening will be followed by a live performance in the FallOut Shelter beginning at 8 pm, by local musicians the Coloradas, celebrating their brand of end-of-the-world bluegrass stomps and sad country ballads; and singer-songwriter, multi-skilled Asa Irons.

Admission is $10.00 at the door with a cash bar to support Waterfall Arts, located at 256 High St. in Belfast. For more information, visit Waterfall Arts or phone 207-338-2222.

Celador (David Hayes, guitar; Gretchen Caverly, violin)
Celador (David Hayes, guitar; Gretchen Caverly, violin)
Celador to Play, Mary Wesley to Call for Belfast Flying Shoes
Celador is the creative alchemy of David Hayes (on guitar, mandolin, tenor banjo, octave mandolin, foot percussion, jaw harp) and Gretchen Caverly (on violin). David pushes the envelope of contra music to keep it fresh and appealing to future generations of dancers. Born and raised in New Orleans, Gretchen has been playing violin since age seven and has gratefully migrated to folk music, falling for contra dance as a student at Warren Wilson College.

Mary Wesley, raised in the cradle of Vermont's Green Mountains, started calling in 2008 and keeps a full schedule, which includes gigs up and down both coasts. In her local community, Mary stirs many pots: founding member of the Mad Robin Callers Collective, active board member of Young Tradition Vermont, and conductor of an oral dance history project.

The evening begins at 6:30 pm with a community dance led by Chrissy Fowler and music by the All-Comers Band, led by Phyllis Buchanan and Jennifer Armstrong. Fun and simple dances will be taught, and both beginner and experienced dancers are encouraged to brush up on and learn new skills. All musicians are welcome to sit in.

The contra dance begins at 8 pm and runs till around 11 pm. Admission for the community dance is $2.00 for adults and $1.00 for children. For the contras, the price is $10.00 for adults over age 20, $7.00 for those aged 13-20 as well as adult All-Comers, and $4.00 for children. As always, $1.00 off admission for every box fan you bring for the windows. For more information, phone Chrissy at 207-338-0979 or visit Belfast Flying Shoes.
