holiday collage
During this holiday season we would like to thank all the people who make such an incredible impact on the MEM program:
  • To our faculty for their wonderful support of MEM students,
  • To our students for their commitment to the program,
  • To our network of alums who continue to tell us their stories and increase awareness of the MEM program.
  From the Director:

I have been approached by MEM alumni in the past 6 months, wondering what Northwestern is doing in the area of entrepreneurship. Some may also wonder about Chicago's competitiveness in the entrepreneurship space, given the strength of locations in Silicon valley and on the West coast. We all need to recognize that the Mayor has deliberately and feverishly pursued technology entrepreneurship as a strategic imperative for Chicago, and has developed a large scale technology incubator in the heart of the city, called 1871. The name is reflective of the entrepreneurial spirit that helped re-build Chicago after the Great Chicago fire of 1871. We see 1871 as a home for technology start-ups, and those who support the entrepreneurial eco-system in Chicago. Towards that end, Northwestern University has participated in 1871 from a variety of entities including Farley center, INVO, MEM and Kellogg. Each of these entities has scheduled events, sessions and student access as needed. The commitment of the University and McCormick to the topic of technical entrepreneurship has never been stronger.

MEM is one of the original Northwestern programs to include a graduate level technical entrepreneurship course, and this became a springboard for the rest of Farley to develop the Nuvention series of courses. With our longstanding relationship in entrepreneurship, it makes sense that MEM conduct some of its information sessions for incoming students in 1871, which we have now scheduled for the first time on February 20, 2013.

This is an exciting time for entrepreneurship and MEM, we have already co-sponsored the 2012 Chicago Innovation awards, and you will see many more linkages between MEM and Farley in the months ahead. I think 1871 has the potential to re-shape Chicago as a destination for technology based startups. As it stands now, the Merchandise Mart has become the home of not just 1871, but also the new downtown Google facility formerly housed in Libertyville. With 3000 talented technologists in residence in the Merchandise Mart, you may find entrepreneurial energy re-emerge in Chicago. Hopefully this re-kindles the fires of innovation and creativity for the Chicagoland area. Northwestern, McCormick, and MEM are all proud to play a part in this transformation.

FIRST MEMPC SIMULATION COMPETITION
February 11 - March 8, 2013

Would you like to meet and compete with students from Cornell, Dartmouth, Duke, and Stanford? Five teams will compete in a simulation similar to IEMS 402. The idea for the competition came from Felipe Saavedra (MEM12) & Antonio Zarza (MEM12). They saw this as a way for students from all the different schools to work together virtually and get to know each other.

If you are a current student and think this would be fun and can make the time commitment of 6-8 hours per week during the competition: Apply here

On October 24, twenty six Alumni from the MEMPC schools held their first networking event in Palo Alto. Work is being done to establish a national MEM Program Alumni Consortium (MEM PAC) structure. I will be in touch with alumni who volunteered to help with MEM PAC to start a regional group in this area. Meanwhile, planning is under way for the next event which will be in Boston in May.
