Some of us are still mourning after watching our favorite team get defeated in the latest Super Bowl. Whether you're licking your wounds, or celebrating with Baltimore, one thing people across the nation can agree on is that the Super Bowl commercials are always reason enough to watch the big game. And companies are capitalizing on that guaranteed attention.
Super Bowl commercials are highly anticipated, generating buzz even before they air. Super Bowl XLVI attracted 111.3 million viewers--making it the most watched U.S. telecast of all time. And it generated $75 million dollars in advertising revenue for NBC.
The average Super Bowl ad is 30 seconds long and costs around 3.75 million dollars. With so much money being spent, do these hyped-up ads really affect return on investment?
A survey by the Retail Advertising and Marketing Association (RAMA) found that 73 percent of respondents view Super Bowl commercials as part of the entertainment. And 8.4 percent said the commercials influence them to go out and buy the products. For young adults 18 to 24, that percentage rose to 14.3. While this may seem like a small percentage, multiply it by the number of people who watch the Super Bowl and you're talking some serious influence.
Additionally, Adweek reports that brands that advertise during the Super Bowl see an average sales increase of more than 11 percent the following month. That ROI is 250 times greater than the average ad.
Even better, these commercials aren't just viewed once on game day. Companies use cross-channel methods to highlight their ad on their website and social media networking sites before and after Super Bowl Sunday. This year, for example, Budweiser touched our hearts with their Clydesdales commercial and then invited us to name the baby Clydesdale featured in the ad by tweeting name ideas using the hashtag #CLYDESDALES.
We recognize that there are a handful of people out there who didn't tune into the big game. In case you missed them, here's a link to watch all the Super Bowl ads again.
As for our favorite football team not getting a ring, there's always next year!
Sincerely,
Mona Graham
