What Permits Do I Need & Why
Helping businesses understand what they need to do in order to operate  their business  in the village is something we're asked about frequently.

The Village doesn't have specific licensing requirements but there is zoning that determines where certain businesses can locate and can control some operational aspects. Miami Township has zoning restrictions also for businesses outside the village.

Greene County controls construction requirements through the Building Department and health regulations through the Greene County Combined Health District. Finally, Miami Township Fire & Rescue has responsibility for building inspections and fire safety.

There have been several articles and letters to the editor in the YS News recently about difficulties with zoning, building and health department requirements for some lodging establishments. It is clear that there is misunderstanding of each element of the regulatory system, the need for regulations at all and how to go about complying with the requirements.

The Chamber would like to provide this information to our members. In addition to knowing what the requirements are, we believe it is imperative that people understand the rationale behind the regulations so that decisions are more understandable rather than seeming arbitrary and unnecessary.

To that end, we have scheduled a special breakfast meeting on October 29 at 9 am to bring the officials together to explain the system and answer your questions. This is intended as a general session that would apply to all businesses, not simply a discussion of the current issues related to lodging. So please join us for a continental breakfast, coffee and some important conversation.

October 29, 9 am Bryan Center A&B

The following officials will be present to answer your questions about Zoning, Building & Health Department Permits necessary for your business:
Yellow Springs Zoning - Patti Bates, Denise Swinger
Miami Township Zoning - Richard Zopf
Miami Township Fire Department - Colin Altman
Greene County Building Department - Al Kuzma
Greene County Health Department - Deborah Leopold
