Age Old Question
| |
Pre-wash or not
So, I have been having a discussion with shop owners and others in the quilting world, "Do you pre-wash your fabrics or not?" I am finding out that quilters either choose to pre-wash their fabrics or they do not and they are each passionate and feel very strongly about which they choose. I am a pre-washer and find it difficult to understand why someone would not prewash their fabrics. Let me tell you why I prewash my fabrics. - My mother told me to. My mother taught me to sew when I was in 4-H sewing in 4th grade so from a very early age I was told to do this.
- I did not do this on my first quilt which was a scrappy 9 patch with white sashing for my queen size bed. Guess what happened the first time I washed it... Some of my white sashing is now pink.
- When, I give a quilt as a gift I do not want the recipient to ever worry about using and loving their quilt. Loving and using your quilt will eventually mean it needs to be washed and dried.
- Peace of mind. I know when I make a quilt the fabric has been put through the washer and dryer and is ready for anything.
So now you know why I am a pre-washer. Share your stories with us on Facebook.

New Glitz Fabric for your Holiday Patterns
| |
Do you like glitter?
I have a great selection of fabric packs and have some new fabric which I am very excited about. The fabric is from Maywood Studios and it is called Glitz. I have a beautiful teal and purple. This is a 100% foil wrapped cotton.
I did a test piece to see how it was to do needle-turn applique. It worked wonderfully. I also tested it with an iron and fusible. It also works well. Ironing on high heat and washing the fabric changes the shine, more of the black shows through. The photo above is a heart which was an unwashed piece of the fabric and the shape on the right was a piece that has been washed. As you can see the shine changes. Both were sewn to the background with needle-turn applique. I would like to recommend when you are transferring the pattern to your fabric that you use pattern transfer paper as this fabric is very difficult to see through making it impossible to use a light box. Come take a look and give these beautiful fabrics a try.

I hope all of you enjoyed the last month of summer and are settling in to the idea that Fall is upon us. I personally am a huge fan of the fall. There is nothing better than walking through colored leaves and the CRUNCH... Doesn't get much better than that. So now you know I am a kid at heart! :-) I am finally ready to share two new pattern s. One of my favorite things about owning Pacific Rim Quilt Company is the opportunity to create new patterns.
I am a designer and enjoy nothing better than drawing and putting things together. Making and creating is very important to all of us. Even if you do not think of yourself as an artist the fact that you make quilts, you are. Sometimes our definition of an artist is a bit narrow. This is one of my favorite quotes from Pablo Picasso "Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up." I feel that we as quilter's have figured out how to remain an artist! Creating is good for the heart and soul!
I hope you like our new patterns and I look forward to sharing more with you in the months to come.
Mahalo,
Connie

Gone Surfing: 2 Fabric Applique Quilt Pattern
|
|
California Dreamin'
After creating Dog & Daisy and Cat Nap, I wanted to create a quilt that Mark had been asking for. He has said for a long time that quilter's create quilts for the ones they love and he wanted a guy quilt. So from that conversation and some suggestions Gone Surfing was born.
Here are Mark's comments on this creation.
Quilts for guys? I am a non-quilter married to a quilter. Prior to buying Pacific Rim Quilt Company with Connie, I did not pay much attention to quilts. But, I enjoyed them for their artistic expression. Since becoming intimately involved in PRQC, I realized that we did not have a quilt that might appeal more to men. Stated another way, could I see our quilts in a man-cave?
Granted, most men would appreciate the design and beauty of our Hawaiian quilts and I could see them in a man-cave. However, to be totally honest, I don't see many of our 2 Fabric Applique' Quilts in the man-cave. I set out to change that.
Quilts make great retirement, graduation or Christmas presents for husbands, wives, children, grandchildren and neighbors.
So... What would appeal to guys: hunting, fishing and cars. I decided that our first manly project would involve cars, but what car. While most guys enjoy cars, each has his own dream car: Corvette, Mustang, GTO, F150, Wileys and the list goes on. But overall, a surf car has universal appeal. The Beach Boys created a whole musical genre around the surf car and the laid back beach lifestyle.
"Gone Surfing" was a truly collaborative effort between Connie and I. Although I have little artistic ability, I gave Connie a rough conceptual drawing along with down-loaded photos of surf cars and beach settings. From there, she used her drawing and drafting background and after numerous iterations, the "Gone Surfing" quilt pattern was born. If our venture into this new concept is successful, we hope to develop other manly quilts in the future. As always we love receiving your ideas for new quilt patterns.

Lilikoi: Hawaiian Wall Quilt Pattern
|
|
Passion Flower
Our latest Hawaiian Wall Quilt was created by Nancy. This is a really beautiful round design.
I saw my first lilikoi (the Hawaiian name for passion flower and passion fruit) in Hawaii, and was amazed by the intricacy of its 10-petal flower. I also love the subtle flavor of the passion fruit. That inspired me, back in 1976, to design a lilikoi wall quilt for our best man and maid of honor.
I found this version of the lilikoi pattern as I was recently going through my old Hawaiian quilt photos, sketches and designs; and decided that I'd like to make it for me, and share it with you.
By the way, one of the blocks in our Tropical Fruit & Nut pattern is lilikoi. I am in love with Nancy's newest design. I am currently working on a version using three colors. This is an incredibly fun and beautiful design. The shapes are beautiful and very enjoyable to applique! I hope you love this as much as I do and add it to your collection. Enjoy the process, one step at a time.

Piggy-backing is good!
Nancy is always eager to teach or speak at more than one location when she travels. If she is able to book multiple events, then each group shares in her travel expenses. So it is really an economical and efficient way to book. If you see that Nancy will be anywhere near* you, then contact her to see if additional engagements can be arranged during the same trip. That way EVERYONE WINS!
*Remember, Nancy is traveling from Washington State. So "near" means that if she will be in Virginia even Florida or Maine is near. Think regionally.
Looking ahead, Nancy is returning to the Academy of Applique in Williamsburg, Virginia. Feb 27 - Mar 3, 2017. Contact Nancy if you live on the East Coast and want to schedule Nancy to visit your guild either just before or just after these dates.
And Nancy will be visiting the San Fernando Valley Quilters in California July 8-10, 2017. Let Nancy know if your guild would like to piggy-back with that trip.
