Quilt Terms for the Non-quilter
A bit of humor from Mark

I am a non-quilter, but I am happily married to a quilt designer. I am also now the big-shot co-owner of an INTERNATIONAL
Mark is hiding behind the cash register.
Quilt Pattern Company. (PRQC ships to foreign counties, such as Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Maine and Baton Rouge). Perhaps you have seen me at the quilt show, hiding in the back of the booth with a scared look on my face. Being around quilters, I discovered that they have a secret language filled with mystic code words. I have learned some
their terminology and I feel it is my duty to share it with other spouses, family and friends of quilters...
  • Fat Quarter: This is larger than normal hamburger with two patties instead of one. Quilters seem food obsessed, or am I?
  • Needle Turn: When quilting, it is important to sew a straight line. No one likes crooked lines. So, they sew in a straight line and then turn and sew in another direction. I am not sure why they need a fancy term for changing angles.
  • Batting: When a quilt gets dusty or dirty, they put the quilt on a clothes line and hit it with a bat. Maybe that is why quilts are so soft.
  • Basting: This took a while to figure out. When you baste a turkey, you spread the juices over the bird. As such, I think what quilters do it cut out pieces of fabric and throw it over the base quilt and then sew the pieces on. You would think that there is more thought put into the placement of quilt pieces, but I guess not.
  • Raw Edge: When I cut wood with a dull saw blade, I get a rough edge. I guess it is the same with fabric.
  • Applique: This is a French word for apply. I think quilter want to sound more international. It sounds better than "sticking one piece of fabric on another."
  • Bias: I understand that some quilters like traditional quilting, some like modern quilting and some like art quilting. As such each quilter has his or her own bias.
  • Jelly Roll: Nothing like a mid-morning snack when quilting.
  • Block quilts: A neighborhood of quilters.
  • Fusible: In my world, a fuse protects an electrical circuit from overload. Maybe this is a device from getting too much fabric on a quilt.

It doesn't seem possible we have made it through the first month of summer. Time sure flies.

We have already had our 4th of July Celebrations and are now moving on to the rest of summer. On the 4th I began to think about a segment on CBS Sunday Morning, I watched a few weeks back. It was about a couple who reunites families in Japan with flags that American soldiers recovered during WW II.

As Japanese soldiers prepared to head off to war one of the items most carried with them were flags. These were given to them by family and friends who had written their well wishes on the flag. It was so interesting and easy to understand why these flags were so important to the families in Japan and to be reunited with them has become very important to many of the American Soldiers who brought them back.

If you would like to read more about their work you can visit the Obon Society.

It made me start thinking about fabrics which are connected to memories.

We all have those special fabric items with memories connecting us to the past: wedding dresses, baptism gowns, linens, and of course quilts. Many of us make quilts for loved ones and with those quilts are all our wishes and thoughts. We think about them as we select or design the pattern, choose the fabrics and make the quilt. Often we make quilts with a visual image of something that makes us think about that person. It can also be colors and shapes that they love or even special fabrics from the past. Knowing that these things are special to the recipient we create and work with that person in our thoughts.

What have you created that has a special place in your heart?  Share with us on Facebook

Mahalo,
Connie
Zebra: 2 Fabric Applique Quilt Pattern

Natures Contrast

When I see a Zebra, the first thing I see are stripes. That is because of the contrast between the black and white. Nature is an incredible teacher and in this case it is a lesson which we can apply to selecting fabrics for our 2 Fabric Applique Quilt Patterns.

When you are selecting fabrics for your 2 Fabric Applique Quilt Pattern, it is important that you choose fabrics which have high contrast.  When I talk about contrast, I am referring to the difference between the light and dark of your fabrics or complimentary colors which are colors that are on opposite sides of the color wheel.  Contrast is important to our patterns since the design is all about the
Created by Linda Horton
line created by the two colors.  If the contrast is not very high the line does not show up and you will not see your design.

It is not always easy to pick fabrics with high contrast. In the quilting world most of the fabrics seem to be in the medium range or have many color values from dark to light. This does not work very well if you are looking for high contrast.

When you are choosing fabrics keep in mind that your fabrics should read as solids from a distance and that you should see a clear difference between the two fabrics.

We have many fabric packs on the web site which demonstrate what I am talking about. Remember that any fabric pack will work with any of our 2 Fabric Applique Quilt Patterns.

Tropical II: Hawaiian Block Pattern

Summer Inspiration

Tropical II Do you like the look of Hawaiian quilt designs? These beautiful designs can be intimidating to the beginner.  They look complex and involved; in reality they are quite simple if you take them one step at a time.

The first step is to realize that they are as simple as making a paper snowflake. Do you remember being in grade school and cutting out snowflakes?

Our instructions walk you through the process of folding your fabric and preparing it for the pattern.  You will place your traced Tropical II - panel A pattern on the folded fabric and pin in place so you can trace around it.  Remove the pattern and pin through all 8 layers.  At this point you cut. Now that you have your design cut and ready to place and baste on the background fabric. Let the fun begin.

These make wonderful summer projects. They are easy to take along and it is fun to watch them come together.

This is just one of our many block patterns. Come take a look and I am sure you will be able to find something to inspire you and that you would like to make for your next project.

Tropical II, Hawaiian Block Patterns, 6 - 21" blocks, $12.00, Purchase yours here.

Nancy is always eager to teach or speak at more than one location when she travels. If she is able to book multiple events, then each group shares in her travel expenses. So it is really an economical and efficient way to book. If you see that Nancy will be anywhere near* you, then contact her to see if additional engagements can be arranged during the same trip. That way EVERYONE WINS!

*Remember, Nancy is traveling from Washington State. So "near" means that if she will be in Virginia even Florida or Maine is near. Think regionally.

Looking ahead, Nancy is returning to the Academy of Applique in Williamsburg, Virginia.  Feb 27 - Mar 3, 2017.  Contact Nancy if you live on the East Coast and want to schedule Nancy to visit your guild either just before or just after these dates.

And Nancy will be visiting the San Fernando Valley Quilters in California July 8-10, 2017.  Let Nancy know if your guild would like to piggy-back with that trip.

A hui hou,
