I HAVE A NOTION
| |
Our favorite notions:
Beam n Read
The Beam n Read hands-free task light is one of the most surprisingly useful notions we carry. This little wonder has been such a great aid for me. I can applique just about anywhere regardless of the lighting. And, this little light around my neck doesn't bother anyone else in the room! Do yourself a favor and give one of these a try! You will not be disappointed. To read more about the Beam n Read click here.

CONFUSED ABOUT COPYRIGHTS
| |
Q: I'm confused. Do I need your permission to display the quilt I made from your pattern in our guild's quilt show? What if someone wants to buy my quilt can I sell it?
We don't blame you! There is plenty of confusion about copyrights, but for a company like ours copyrights are very important and necessary.
We don't presume to be able to clear up all the confusion but we can tell you what you can and cannot do with our patterns, pattern instructions, videos, book, photographs and website, all of which are copyright protected by Pacific Rim Quilt Company.
You may make quilts from our patterns for your personal use or to give as gifts to your family and friends.
You may display quilts made from our patterns in quilt shows or donate them to a charity for fund-raising purposes, with proper credit. The label on the quilt, all promotional materials showing pictures of your quilt, and signs displayed with the quilt must include: The name of the pattern, Pacific Rim Quilt Company.
You may not sell quilts, or any other items, made from our patterns or using our designs.
You may not make copies of our patterns, or the instructions, to give to others. If you are teaching a class using our patterns, a pattern must be purchased for or by each student.
And, as it states at the bottom of every page on our Web site: "No part of this (our) Web site, the quilts, quilt designs, or the photos may be copied or reproduced, in any manner, without written permission." If in doubt about what you can or cannot do with any of our PRQC products, or items made from them, please ask. Here is where you can find this Copyright information on our website.

It is said in many cultures, that ladybugs are a sign of good luck, upcoming fortunes, plentiful crops, glorious weather and wishes granted. A stroll through our yard today blessed me with many ladybug sightings.
Spring is such a special time and a wonderful time to be Creative. Everything feels new and has a different look and feel when Spring arrives. Why not take a hint from nature and begin a new project or shake up an old one?
As we travel back from the Quilter's Anonymous Show in Monroe, Washington, I am feeling blessed and renewed. We met so many of our customers and saw some amazing quilts along the way. Thank you all for the kind words! I look forward to our next show "Quilts for all Seasons", April 1-2 in Kennewick, Washington. See you soon!

CELTIC HEART: 2 Fabric Applique Quilt Pattern
|
|
Spring and Love are in the Air
Since ancient times, hearts have been symbolic of emotion, including love and affection.
The Celtic heart is among the most romantic of symbols, formed from one continuous line, representing the union of souls. And continuing faith and love as one travels through the journey of life together.
Our Celtic Heart pattern is a lovely representation of hearts being joined. The pattern design gives the illusion of a continuous line. The gently curving lines and minimal inside corners make this an appliquer's dream to stitch.
Celtic Heart, 2 Fabric Applique Quilt, pattern, 24" x 36". Normally this pattern sells for $12.00. For a limited time it is the Internet Special for just $10.00. Purchase yours here.

TROPICAL FLORAL: Hawaiian Block Patterns
|
|
Beautiful Flowers All Around
There are not many things that I enjoy more than a beautiful flower. Special things about spring include the arrival of flowers. They add a lovely bit of color and fragrance to our yards.
If you love flowers you will enjoy our Tropical Floral block patterns. With these block patterns the possibilities are endless. They can be used to make a wall hanging, tablerunner, placemats, pillows, quilt borders, or anything else you can dream up. My list could go on and on. It is a fun and simple way to dip your toe into the water of Hawaiian Quilting.
I spoke with a customer the other day who said she was working on a king size quilt using our block patterns. She said it was her portable project! :-) Who would have thought that a king size quilt could be portable?
Tropical Floral, Hawaiian Quilt block patterns, six 21" blocks. $12.00. Purchase yours here.

If you are new to needleturn applique, or Hawaiian Quilting you may benefit from our instructional DVD

FOREST FINERY: Applique Table Runners and Quilt Borders
|
|
Creative Fabric Choices
| Forest Finery created using Janice's hand-dyed fabric |
Forest Finery is one of those patterns where the design possibilities are endless. I have a couple of options here for inspiration. The first uses Janice's hand-dyed fabric. To make this we use one 2-yard piece of rainbow-dyed fabric; cut the background out of one length 15" wide; then flip the remaining fabric end-to-end to cut the applique piece. This reverses the colors creating the contrast. I love the effect this creates, don't you? A very springtime option is to use lovely greens for your stems and leaves, with different colored flowers. This quilt was created by Diana Vilas. I also love how this pattern looks in a variety of fall leaf colors.
Now, imagine it on a white background with green and red applique! Make one for every season.
For even more variety, this pattern includes options for a 13" x 38" short runner and two placemats.
Forest Finery, Applique Quilt Borders and Table Runners pattern. $12.00.

CREATIVE MANIPULATION
|
|
8th in our series on Creativity
As we continue our Creativity series of it occurred to me that you may think creativity is only valid, or necessary, when starting with a blank slate and creating something completely unique from scratch. Au contraire, you engage creativity every time you make a decision to go in a unique direction. Deciding on colors, choosing fabrics, placement of values...all are creative actions. So this month we will consider several ways to add your creative touch to any project through manipulation.
To manipulate is to adapt or change something to make it your own; your unique creation. Whether you start with a blank slate, a commercial pattern, or something else, trying these manipulation techniques could be the stepping stone, or spring board to move your creation from good to great.
Think of your design or project and consider these options / variations:
|
Now think of your materials and consider these options / variations:
|
- Enlarge / magnify
- Reduce / minimize
- Adapt
- Duplicate
- Pair
- Reverse
- Combine
- Eliminate
- Rearrange
- Parody
- Fantasize
- Rotate
- Add / subtract / multiply / divide
|
- Cut
- Pleat
- Tear
- Fold
- Patch
- Dye
- Bleach
- Wrinkle
- Press
- Fringe
- Paint
- Stitch
- Embellish
|
Scared? Then play with samples. Wondering what would happen if you used bleach to lighten a specific area? Then bleach scraps of the fabrics to see if that's the look you want. Practice new stitches on scraps until you are satisfied with the look. Take photographs, or make photocopies of your design and manipulate that to see what will happen. Trace your design on blank paper; photocopy the tracing multiple times; then use colored pencils to try out different color schemes; or use scissors to try different arrangements. Ask yourself "What if?" Then either make a sample or simulate it on paper before committing.
Stepping stones lead us down a path one step at a time; a spring board catapults us well beyond our starting position. Either way, you experience the joy of creation.
Do the unexpected! When everyone else zigs, you zag. Find your path!
Share with us on Facebook the creative changes you have made to your current projects. Next month we'll consider how to evaluate your creative ideas. Don't be nervous, I said evaluate, not criticize! And we will wrap up this series in May as we consider how to overcome obstacles

Piggy-backing is good!
Nancy is always eager to teach or speak at more than one location when she travels. If she is able to book multiple events, then each group shares in her travel expenses. So it is really an economical and efficient way to book. If you see that Nancy will be anywhere near* you, then contact her to see if additional engagements can be arranged during the same trip. That way EVERYONE WINS!
*Remember, Nancy is traveling from Washington State. So near means that if she will be in Virginia even Florida is near. Think regionally.
