CREATIVITY
3rd in our series of suggestions for ways to kick-start, or to continue stimulating YOUR creative juices.

What are the characteristics of Creativity?
  • Imagination
  • Expressiveness
  • Originality
  • Ability or power to create things
  • Looking at the same thing(s) as everyone else and making something different
  • Energy
  • Passion mixed with courage
Some of you look at the list and say, "That's me!" Others can claim a few of the traits, and fewer still will find nothing in common with this list.

If you feel you have only a few or none of these traits, is all lost? What can you do if you want to be creative, but don't feel you have what it takes to pull it off? Or, you get close but never seem really successful?

We have given you some suggestions and things to try in the last two newsletters. Here are a few more  suggestions:
  • Don't follow the rules.
  • Work and play as though there are no limits or boundaries.
  • Be resourceful - use what you have at hand.
  • Use familiar things in new ways.
  • Do something you have been avoiding.
  • Encourage others to try something new.
  • Think of yourself as being creative! (As you think, so you are.)

We love that last one. Can it be as simple as thinking of yourself as being creative?! We think so! If you tell yourself you can't, you won't. If you tell youself you can, you will.

Share your creations and thoughts with us on our Facebook page. What are you doing to help you be more creative? What have you created lately?

Booth in Hugo, OR I am sure you have noticed that the first time you do something on your own it brings with it a mix of feelings: apprehension, anticipation, and exhilaration. I experienced all of those last week as Mark and I ventured out to vend at our first quilt show without Nancy's experience and reassuring presence. To add to the challenge vendors at this show are outdoors! I was on my own for set-up and the first day of the show, then Mark joined me the second day and helped with take-down. We had a ball! We are excited about doing more shows as a team. Thank you to everyone who visited our booth. We enjoyed meeting you all.

There is just one last opportunity to visit Nancy and I at a quilt show in 2015. It is the Washington State Quilters Guild, Spokane Chapter show in Spokane, Washington. We look forward to seeing friends from Canada, Washington, Idaho, Oregon, Montana and beyond at this one! Make your plans now to visit our booth! Find details on our Calendar. We hope to see you soon.

As we draw closer to the winter holiday season we have a few thoughts for you about gifts and gift-giving. Keep reading.

E komo mai,

Welcome,

Connie & Nancy

GIVE THAT GIFT, AGAIN AND AGAIN!

It's a work-in-progress

Nancy's relatives have learned that it sometimes takes a few years to receive a gift that has been given several times along the way. What does that mean?!?

It begins, let's say, with a wedding. The bride and groom receive a card that tells them Nancy will be making them a very special quilt and they are invited to select their colors. That's gift #1/year #1. On the couples' second, or third, anniversary they are presented with an appliqued top. That's gift #2/year #2 or #3. Each subsequent year they are shown the progress on their quilt. Until, Ta Da! On perhaps their fifth anniversary they are presented with their finished hand-made Hawaiian wedding quilt.

Anticipation is a wonderful thing for the recipient. And not having to work to a specific deadline makes it more fun for the quiltmaker. Don't you agree?

Now this can also work for birthdays, Christmas, house warmings, you name it. Special quilts (especially Hawaiian quilts) are not made quickly, they are an investment of time and love. The progress can be slow in our busy lives, that's why Nancy lets the recipient of the gift share in its progress over time!

Andrew's 1st b-day
1st grandson's 1st birthday
In Hawaii a child's first birthday is a huge celebration. That has worked well for Nancy as a grandmother, too. From the time any of her children have announced the coming of a child, Nancy sets to work knowing that she has a good year and a half to make the baby's first Hawaiian quilt (a crib quilt, mind you!). Sometimes she finishes it on time, but not always. Hey, grandmas are only human!

DESIGN YOUR PERSONAL HAWAIIAN QUILT
DYPHQ title
If you can cut with scissors you can do this!

As we draw closer to the gift-giving season it's time to start thinking about gifts. As quiltmakers we love giving special, personal things we have created.

To tie in our series of articles on creativity and gift-giving with your thinking about gifts, we want to open your mind to the very real option of you designing a Hawaiian quilt for someone you love, or for yourself, using our book and companion DVD.
Design Your Personal Hawaiian Quilt
Before you dismiss the suggestion out of hand, read these two comments from quilters, just like you, who designed their first Hawaiian quilt patterns with Nancy and Janice's help:

"I am amazed that I actually had the creative ability to design a pattern." (Linda Bradford, Missouri)

"I'm disciplining myself not to drag people in off the streets to show them my beautiful design, which will one day be a beautiful quilt! Thank you for helping me achieve this dream." (Margaret Spatafore, Washington)

By following the steps Janice and Nancy take you through in the book and DVD we believe everyone can design a Hawaiian quilt. Yes, even you. We could give you a hundred reasons why we believe you CAN do this. It is frustrating to us that so few people believe us. It takes no drawing talent, you don't need to visualize a finished design in your mind before you begin. All you need is a passion, a desire to WANT to design your own Hawaiian quilt. Let us show you how.

HQ design process
If you can cut with scissors...you can do this!
Trust us, please. Follow your passion and see where it leads you. Ask your Santa Claus to order the book for you, order it for yourself, order it for a friend. It is our current Internet Special as an inducement to get you to place your order. We don't want so much to sell books, as we want more people to be designing Hawaiian quilts!

Here is a link where you can view the Contents page from the book. It is a simple process, we lead you through step by step. The book explains in words, pictures, and diagrams what to do; on the companion DVD watch our demonstrations, go with us to Hawaii to be inspired, and watch our students, people just like you, design their personal Hawaiian quilts.

It is year #1, give the gift of your Hawaiian quilt design to a loved one this year.

Design Your Personal Hawaiian Quilt book and DVD set normally sells for $45.00. For a limited time it is our Internet Special for just $43.00. Buy yours now.

Inspiration. We invite you again to see the quilts people just like you have designed using our book and DVD set. Visit the Gallery - Design on our website. You will be impressed and encouraged to know that you too can design your personal Hawaiian quilt!

WOODLAND LEI: Hawaiian Quilt

The universal appeal of circular designs

Woodland Lei, purple What is it about circles that are so appealing? Circular designs are easy to view and comforting. The circle naturally leads our eyes around and around. Without the sharp edges and angles of squares and triangles we become immersed in the design.

With any Hawaiian quilt that has a border you always have the option to
Woodland Lei no border
Woodland Lei without a border
leave the border off for a different look, and even a smaller quilt size. Take for example this version of Woodland Lei without the border (right), the design is even more circular and can be made a few inches smaller (or not, your choice).

This pattern also comes with a companion 21" pattern for a block, pillow, or tote (below). We love to give you options!

And another: "I watched both DVDs and they are sooooo wonderful. I just love how up close and personal the camera gets. I can see everything. The programs are a great tool to center you. Connie & Nancy's Whereabouts:

2015 is winding down. Only a few opportunities remain to meet Connie and Nancy, or take a class from Nancy. Here are the places where you can find one or both of them; watch a presentation at a shop or guild; or find us at a quilt show. Most guilds welcome visitors, so don't be shy.

Make your plans now for one or more of these events:

2015 Shows, Classes, and Events:
  • Oct 16-18, Spokane, WA. Washington State Quilters-Spokane Chapter "Vive la Difference" quilt show.
  • Oct 21-22, Yakima, WA. Yakima Valley Quilters Guild. Program and Hawaiian Applique workshop with Nancy.
  • Nov 9, Kent, WA. Evergreen Piecemakers Quilt Guild. Hawaiian quilt evening program with Nancy.
  • Nov 18, Reedsport, OR. Hand Applique Landscape class with Nancy.
  • Lots of events are already on the schedule for 2016, check our Calendar to see when we will be in your area!
Register early for classes.  They can fill quickly, or be canceled if not enough people register in advance.

If you do not live where you can take a class from Nancy in person, then perhaps an online class at Academy of Quilting would work for you.

Academy of Quilting brings you the joy of learning quilting, applique & patchwork in the comfort of your home with online classes. Here are the next start dates for Nancy's classes:
  • October 16, Make Your Own Hawaiian Quilt
  • October 30, 2 Fabric Applique
  • Nov 6, Celtic Knot Tablerunner

Visit the Calendar on our website for Nancy's 2016 schedule of classes at Academy of Quilting.

Schedule Nancy now for your show or event in 2016, 2017 and beyond. If you would like her to come to your area to teach, let your quilt shop, quilt guild, or show organizer know. Print Nancy's Brochure and pass it along.

Piggy-backing is good!
Nancy is always eager to teach or speak at more than one location when she travels. If she is able to book multiple events, then each group shares in her travel expenses. So it is really an economical and efficient way to book. If you see that Nancy will be anywhere near* you, then contact her to see if additional engagements can be arranged during the same trip. That way EVERYONE WINS!

*Remember, Nancy is traveling from Washington State. So near means that if she will be in Virginia even Florida is near. Think regionally.

Thank you for spending a little of your precious time with us, we really appreciate it. Remember to send us your stories, pictures, questions, or suggestions. We love hearing from you.

A hui hou,
Until next time,

 Connie & Nancy
