WORLD OF QUILTS

Especially for our Australian readers:

The makers of Australia's Down Under Quilts magazine have published a special bookazine titled World of Quilts. This special edition is filled with beautiful quilts and patterns from around the world. We are thrilled and honored to be included in the HAWAII section. Other sections include: Japan, Amish, India, Scandinavia and Britain.

We designed a special Australian Hawaiian quilt pattern just for this publication: Golden Waddle. (For those of you not in Australia, Golden Wattle is Australia's national flower.) Here is a picture of the 53.5cm x 53.5cm (21" x 21") quilt made using the pattern, only available in the World of Quilts bookazine.

If you are in a shopping-kind-of-mood, we are in a sale-kind-of-mood. A perfect fit! In addition to the sales on our bed-sized Breadfruit pattern AND Dragonflies in Flight pattern, we also have many Fabric Packs, bolt fabrics and all our sun-printed Langa Lapu king-size fabrics on SALE!! We have never had this much on sale before, and may never do it again. Snatch up your bargains while they last. Don't see what you want today? Check back, new sale items will be added as we go.

This is a special time of year, filled with family, friends and memories of holiday seasons gone by. We had a small family Thanksgiving dinner two weeks ago when Nancy's daughter and grandson were here for a visit from the East Coast. We have not had a toddler to watch all day (all week, for that matter!) in 20+ years. We thought the ratio of five adults to monitor the activity of one toddler was a good ratio. Where do they get the energy?!
Thank You
Enjoy time with your family while you celebrate the bounty in your lives. Everyone has things to be thankful for. We count your loyalty, creativity and the beautiful things you make among our many blessings. Thank you for being part of our lives.

E komo mai,

Welcome,

Nancy & Janice

DRAGONFLIES IN FLIGHT - 2 Fabric Applique Quilt

Different Fabrics, Different Looks, More Possibilities

Dragonflies in Flight

Do you pick a pattern to buy because you love the colors of the quilt pictured on the cover? Or do you really love the design? If that same pattern cover had shown a quilt in different colors would you have still picked it? Most of us are probably attracted to color first. Skimming a magazine your eye will notice the quilts in the colors you have a preference for. You may never pause to look at quilts in colors that do not appeal to you, regardless of the design. Have you noticed yourself doing that?

Dragonflies 2 options
Notice how different these 2 quilts look using the same 2 fabrics.
Left: Dark applique on bright background
Right: Bright applique on dark background

Dilemma #1: Pattern designers and pattern companies can only show one quilt on a pattern cover - just one - that is supposed to appeal to everyone. An impossible task! Nancy likes blues and purples, Janice likes greens and reds, you hate orange, but love pink, one friend likes earthy colors, another likes jewel tones. One person wants the image on the quilt to be done in realistic colors, another in fanciful colors. We can only show one quilt on a pattern cover, but there are an infinite number of ways to change the look of the pattern using different fabrics.

Dragonflies on Dragonflies
Dragonfly fabric used

Challenge #1: Look at the patterns on our website or in a magazine trying to ignore the colors and look primarily at the design. Find a quilt pattern you love, even though you aren't in love with the color or fabric in the picture. How hard was that for you to do?

Knowing how strongly color influences your choice of patterns, you may also want to take a new look at patterns you have passed by in the past. Did you really not like the design, or were you reacting to colors that are not your favorite?

Dragonflies-magenta

Dilemma #2: Fabric manufacturers seldom reprint a fabric for very long. Yes, there are basic lines that are available year after year, but frequently the exciting fabrics that make a quilt sing are never to be found after the initial run sells out. So, if you fall in love with the fabrics pictured on the cover quilt are you willing to re-imagine this favorite pattern in other fabrics, even different colors? There really is no one perfect fabric for a quilt pattern. Any pattern can be rendered equally successfully in a variety of fabrics.

Dragonflies in Flight is a favorite pattern of ours. We have made it multiple times - different every time. So you can see how different one pattern can look with different fabrics, here we are showing you a number of quilts made from just this one pattern. We are sure one or two of these will be more appealing to you than others. But, the only thing that has changed is the fabric/color, not the design.

Dragonflies shimmery
Challenge #2: Consider the different ways you can render your favorite pattern just by switching up the fabrics. A visit to the Fabric Pack pages on our website is a great place to start. Knowing that you can pick any fabrics to make your favorite pattern what would you choose? If you don't see a Fabric Pack you like, you can visit our Fabric Finder page to find fabrics to re-imagine your favorite pattern. (Remember, many of our Fabric packs and fabrics are on sale!)

Try this: When you can't decide whether it is the pattern or the colors you don't like, make a black and white (grayscale) photocopy of the quilt photo. Now, do you like the design with no color? Is it easier to re-imagine this design in different colors?

Dragonflies Silhouette To see the variety of fabrics other quilters have chosen to make quilts using our patterns visit our Gallery pages.

Purchase your Dragonflies in Flight pattern here. Normally this pattern sells for $12.00, for a very limited time it is only $10.00. Get yours now.

NA ULU O HAWAII: BREADFRUIT - Hawaiian Quilt

Abundant Love

JanetSalcido Na Ulu
Na Ulu O Hawaii by Janet Salcido

We have told you before that the Breadfruit is a symbol for plenty, or abundance in Hawaii. How appropriate then that Janet Salcido would choose this pattern to make for her son and his bride's wedding quilt. An abundance of love, an abundance of happiness, and an abundance of stitches, all wrapped up in one gorgeous quilt!

Note: If you want suggestions for which Hawaiian quilt pattern to choose for your special someone see our ideas and suggestions on the Q&A page of our website.

CaroleSicora Na Ulu
Wai'apo, by Carol Sicora

Here is another ambitious and proud mother. Carol Sicora sent us this photo a while ago, when she was just a few weeks into appliqueing the quilt. It also is from our Na Ulu pattern. Carol told us, "I would like to call my personal quilt Wai'apo, because of the color. I am making it for my oldest son in Florida. Wai'apo means 'first water in heaven, in its purest form before it touches the earth.'" What a lovely sentiment. Abundant love, for sure. Thank you, ladies, for sharing your love-filled quilts with all of us.

Na Ulu scale When viewing a large quilt in a tiny picture it can leave you with the thought that those shapes are much too tiny to be appliqued by a mere mortal such as you. To help you get past that fear, here is a photo showing a part of the Na Ulu quilt in its actual size, close-up with Nancy's hand in the picture to help you see the true scale. These leaves and fruits are large enough to be easily appliqued by you.

Na Ulu O Hawaii is also a current Internet Special. The normal price of $15.00 is reduced for a limited time to only $12.00. Buy yours now.

Piggy-backing is good!
Nancy is always eager to teach or speak at more than one location when she travels. If she is able to book multiple events, then each group shares in her travel expenses. So it is really an economical and efficient way to book. If you see that Nancy will be anywhere near* you, then contact her to see if additional engagements can be arranged during the same trip. That way EVERYONE WINS!

PIGGY-BACK: Nancy is in southern California from Feb 14 - Feb 16, with nothing to do. Oh my! Perhaps your guild, shop, or group would like her to teach for you. If so, please send her an email.

PIGGY-BACK: Nancy will be teaching in Arlington Heights, Illinois March 19-21, 2015. If you would like her to teach or speak at your guild or shop between March 13 and 18, or between March 22 and 25, please send her an email.

PIGGY-BACK: Nancy will be on the east coast (US) from April 9-11, 2015. Contact her if you would like her to teach or speak at your guild or shop either right before April 9 or after April 11.

*Remember, Nancy is traveling from Oregon. So near means that if she will be in Virginia even Florida is near. Think regionally.

Thank you for spending a little of your precious time with us, we really appreciate it. Remember to send us your stories, pictures, questions, or suggestions. We love to hear from you.

A hui hou,
Until next time,

Nancy & Janice
