CUSTOMER QUESTIONS

We frequently receive questions about making quilts of different sizes from our patterns. Here are two of those questions with our answers.

Question #1:
"Do you have Hawaiian patterns for twin quilts??? Something in the neighborhood of 65 by 85/90 for size??? Square quilts won't work for what I want. Thanks for your help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Answer #1:
"We just added two new rectangular Hawaiian quilt patterns to our website: Anthurium and Crown Flower. Either one would work for you. Another pattern that would work is the Delicate Beauty. Go to this page to see all three.

"The cool thing about Hawaiian quilt patterns is that you start with the fabric** just a bit larger than you want the finished quilt, then you cut your applique from the center of the applique fabric, and place it in the center of the larger background fabric.

"In your case start with something like 72" by 90/95". This allows for shrinkage due to quilting and squaring the quilt for binding. The larger fabric makes the outer edge/border wider, while leaving the applique the same size and centered on the top of the bed. Those extra inches are what end up draping down the sides of the bed. Starting with any of the three rectangular patterns gives you a design that would fit nicely on a twin bed."

** For Anthurium and Delicate Beauty:
the applique fabric, background fabric and backing are all the same size.
For Crown Flower: the applique fabric is cut just as the pattern specifies, the background and backing will be the larger size.

Question #2:
"Your pattern DELICATE BEAUTY is great, but can it be enlarged about double for a King Size bed?"

Answer #2: "Since the Delicate Beauty pattern makes a rectangular quilt that measures approx. 44" x 68", doubling that pattern will not provide you with a quilt that is large enough for a king-size bed, nor will it be the right proportion. However, enlarged, it might be lovely to use it as a center medallion, then add a border of your own design, or other Hawaiian quilt blocks around it to make into a king-size quilt.

"You should also visit the Questions & Answers page on our website to read more about enlarging (or reducing) our patterns. There is a lot to consider when contemplating such a move, so we offer our advice and several alternative ideas in our Q&A.

"You might instead consider buying our book & DVD set "Design Your Personal Hawaiian Quilt", using Delicate Beauty as a starting point, and design your very own Hawaiian quilt. This book/DVD gives you instructions for turning your ideas into your very own unique Hawaiian quilt design. And it is easier than you think!"

Anthurium

You probably recognize the flower pictured above, but may not know its name. It is anthurium (an-THOOR-ē-um), a popular tropical flower often seen in flower arrangements. It was our inspiration for one of the THREE NEW quilt patterns we are introducing this month!

Yes! Three new patterns. While inspiration plays the largest part in how we decide what design motifs to put in our next patterns, we do listen to you, too. We often receive requests for rectangular Hawaiian quilt patterns, and requests for a 2 Fabric Applique Quilt (2FAQ) pattern with an owl. You ask, we deliver (eventually).

Do you feel like you are in the calm before the storm of the upcoming holiday rush? Whether yes, or no, take a few minutes for yourself. Grab a comforting cup of something soothing or refreshing to drink and spend a few minutes with us now. There will be time enough later to start checking off all the To-Dos on your list.

E komo mai,

Welcome,

Nancy & Janice

3 NEW QUILT PATTERNS !!!

2 NEW Hawaiian, 1 NEW 2FAQ

Have you ever noticed that most Hawaiian quilt designs are square or round? The only way to get a rectangular quilt then is to start with rectangle-cut fabrics and center the square or

round design on them. But with our new patterns your applique is rectangular, too!

Anthurium
Anthurium, 40" x 64"

Great for a bed or a wall. Until now, we had just one rectangular Hawaiian quilt pattern (Delicate Beauty: Hibiscus). Now we have two more!

Anthurium, as pictured, is a 40" x 64" quilt. If you want to make it larger, say for a twin bed, just cut the fabrics 66" x 90" (or your preferred size). The applique will be the same as you see pictured here, but the edge/border will be wider. Your applique will still be centered nicely on the top of the bed with the wider border draping down the sides of the bed.

Anthuriums grow in many colors from various shades of red, to purple, green, and white; and in a variety of shapes from flat or cupped to heart and tear-drop shapes. They thrive in moist, shady locations with high humidity. Popular in tropical floral arrangements, the cut flowers last in a vase for up to 60 days!

Introduced to Hawaii from South America in 1889, they have long been popular as a garden flower. Because of their long-lasting colorful flower spathes and ornamental leaves they are now shipped worldwide, with 95% of the commercial production coming from the windward side of the Big Island of Hawaii.

This quilt, in red and white, would make a lovely Christmas or Valentine quilt, with it's heart-shaped leaves and flowers. Or, make it in your favorite colors for anytime of year, or in the favorite colors of anyone special to you as a priceless gift.

Crown Flower
Crown Flower - 36" x 48"

Crown Flower: Pua Kalaunu is a smaller pattern for a wall hanging, crib or baby quilt. The crown flower symbolism seems particularly appropriate for a special child, your pride and joy, or to celebrate special occasions.

The purple flower variety was first brought to Hawaii from India around 1870, the white variety appeared later. Crown flower is a member of the milkweed family, and, appropriately, is host to Monarch Butterflies in Hawaii. In fact, the Monarch caterpillars can only survive on the crown flower plant. The milk provides nourishment and acts as a poison to its predators. A hardy plant, easy to grow in tropical gardens.

The gorgeous leis made from the crown flower blossoms are long-lasting, and not very fragrant (a welcome feature for many people). A favorite of Hawaiian
ali'i (royalty), they were a particular favorite of the beloved Queen Liliuokalani, last queen of Hawaii.

Owl Family
Owl Family - 24" x 36"
And our third NEW pattern, adding to our 2 Fabric Applique Quilt line, is

Owl Family.

Papa and Mama with big brother and baby sister. So adorable. Perfect for all you owl lovers, and another option for a baby nursery or child's room. Too cute!

REMEMBER: Every one of our 2FAQ patterns includes instructions for making these quilts using needleturn applique by hand, or machine applique using fusible web, or raw-edge machine applique. In a hurry for a quick kid's quilt? This could be the perfect pattern to try the raw-edge applique method. The raw edges could make your owls look more feathery, and take much less time to complete for a baby shower gift. (To read our previous article "FAST! Raw-Edge Applique", see our December 2011 e-Newsletter.)
