I HAVE A NOTION

Introducing you to the notions Nancy and Janice use.

Perfect Thread Bag
Perfect Thread Bag
Thread Caddy - open
Wow, the perfect way to store and access your applique thread! Holds 48 spools of Aurifil thread (small, 220-yard spools, or similar).

What makes it so perfect? Put your thread spools in the plastic pockets. Then, using a large-eye needle, pull each thread through the red faux-suede strip. When you need a particular color, just pull on the thread tail and snip off the length you want. No need to take spools in and out. All the thread stays clean and neat. Use the large plastic pocket to hold your sewing notions. Folds up, neat and compact, to travel with you - around the house, or around the world.

Thread Bag (without thread) $35.00. Buy it now.

Thread Bag with 40 spools of Aurifil cotton thread $195.00. Buy it now.
(As we told you last month, Aurifil raised their thread prices for 2014. We will hold our low 2013 prices as long as we can. Stock up now.)

$2 US postage
(Note: The Traveling Thread Caddy was originally designed and marketed by Pat Campbell. After Pat's passing last year, Karen Kay Buckley purchased the rights to this caddy/bag and she now markets it as the Perfect Thread Bag (TM). It is the same bag. Along with Karen, we are working through the original stock she purchased from Pat, when those are gone we will continue to carry the same bag in Karen's new packaging.)

Aloha!

We would be remiss if we let January go by without wishing you a Happy New Year. January is typically when we stop to Calendarsreflect on the previous year and make plans for the coming year. As we get older it is also a stark reminder of how quickly the years are passing us by. Think about it, when you were 5 years old a year represented 1/5th of your life...and appropriately a year dragged on and on and on. But, with each passing year the duration of a year shrinks to what ? 1/40th of your life, 1/52nd, 1/67th, or maybe even 1/95th of your life? Is it any wonder that a year now passes in the blink of an eye?! When was the last time you celebrated your half-year birthday, like when you were 5-1/2? I sure did not celebrate 62-1/2!

What do you have planned for 2014? We hope you are thinking of new experiences, positive intentions, exciting adventures, and creative endeavors. May you fill your year with wonderful memories to cherish forever.

E komo mai,

Welcome,

Nancy & Janice

A NEW YEAR - A NEW PROJECT

Aloha Album

What exactly is an album quilt? Think of a photo album, or scrapbook: several photos that all have personal meaning and that tell the story of a trip or a special event. A photo album tells a visual story, records memories, honors what is important to you. (You know, like the one you will be making with all your wonderful 2014 adventures and creations!)

Aloha Album
72" x 90" version

The same then can be said for an album quilt. Each block tells a story, or holds a memory of something that is important or meaningful to you.

What story will your Aloha Album tell? Here is a list of the motifs in each block, but it will be up to you to add your stories to make it personal to you.

Anchored by four Hawaiian quilt blocks in the corners:

Upper left corner: Taro

Upper right corner: Breadfruit or ulu

Lower right corner: Sea turtles or honu

Lower left corner: Lauae fern

The remaining blocks are:

Top center left: Plumeria blossoms in a woven basket
Top center right: Lokelani (rose) and maile lei around a small Hawaiian-style medallion
Left side top: Hawaiian coat of arms

Left side middle: "Aloha" surrounded by a lei with the flowers of each island and the Kamehameha butterfly

Left side bottom: Angel's trumpet tree

Right side top: Orchid
Right side middle: "Kuuipo" (sweetheart) surrounded by a pikake and maile lei

Right side bottom: Diamond Head in a heart-shaped maile frame

Bottom center left: Ohelo berry lei
Bottom center right: A tropical fruit display on a lauhala woven mat

Center medallion: lush tropical floral display in three vases
Upper swag: Maile
Lower swag: Lilikoi (passion fruit)

In the October 2010 edition of our e-Newsletter we shared with you how this quilt came to be and the special meaning it holds for us. Take just a few minutes to read that story, too.

Internet Special: Normally the Aloha Album pattern sells for $45.00. For a limited time it is only $42.00. Buy the pattern here. Start your New Year with an exciting new project!

Economical - yes! All the blocks in one package can seem like a significant outlay of funds. But, when you consider that other large quilts with multiple applique blocks sold individually can add up to significantly more (for example, $7.00 x 15 = $105), this is a bargain. We are even giving you a FREE block ... see below.

Fabric: If the prospect of selecting all the fabrics to make this quilt seems a bit daunting, let us help. Janice hand-dyes fabrics specifically for this quilt, and packages the fabric you need for the applique in a single Fabric Pack available here. You simply supply the background fabric of your choice.

Extra bonus:  Buy both the pattern and the hand-dyed fabric pack and save $5!

Thread: The Perfect Thread Bag (at left) is ideal for the assortment of thread you will use on this quilt.

Gallery: See more photos of the Aloha Album quilt and its individual blocks in this Gallery.

Tropical Splendor If Aloha Album feels like more than you can handle, consider Tropical Splendor. This is a separate pattern displaying three vases filled with tropical flowers. While this 36" x 42" pattern is included in Aloha Album, you can purchase it individually for only $15.00. (All the other blocks are only available in the Aloha Album pattern.)

ALOHA HIBISCUS -  FREE applique pattern

Alternate block for Aloha Album

Aloha Hibiscus You love everything about the Aloha Album quilt. It really speaks to you, tells your story. Well, all but that one block. Understandable. We often look at sampler or album quilts and say, "I really like all the blocks, but that one." So, we have an option for you! Make an easy substitution. This 18" block can be substituted for any of the square blocks in Aloha Album. Or use it in any album or sampler quilt you are making. It is our gift to you.

You can print the FREE pattern for this block from our website. Just click on the photo, or click here

Enjoy!

WELCOME: 2 Fabric Applique Quilt

E Komo Mai

Each month we greet you with the Hawaiian greeting: "E komo mai", which means "Welcome." In August we received this email: "I love two fabric [applique] quilting. I'm amazed as the design reveals itself to me. I was hoping for the pineapple 2-fabric quilt, that you had lettering layout for "E KOMO MAI" in addition to "WELCOME".

Welcome We thought that was such a great idea we created a pattern variation to accomplish just that. Here it is, just in time to WELCOME 2014!

We have no quilt photo at the present time to show the new variation. Janice will try to do a digital mock-up, which we will put on the website. But for those of you who can see the vision, here is a link to the FREE pattern variation so you can put either Welcome or E Komo Mai on your quilt.

E Komo Mai
E KOMO MAI, Welcome pattern variation

Welcome, 36" x 24", $12.00.  Purchase your pattern here,
and then print the pattern variation from the website.

We owe our thanks to Marcia Tiblit for her suggestion.

Piggy-backing is good!
Nancy is always eager to teach or speak at more than one location when she travels. If she is able to book multiple events, then each group shares in her travel expenses. So it is just an economical and efficient way to book. If you see that Nancy will be anywhere near* you, then contact her to see if additional engagements can be arranged during the same trip. That way EVERYONE WINS!

*Remember, Nancy is traveling from Oregon. So near means that if she will be in Florida even Virginia is near. Think regionally.

Thank you for spending a little of your precious time with us, we really appreciate it. Remember to send us your stories, pictures, questions, or suggestions. We love to hear from you.

A hui hou,
Until next time,

Nancy & Janice
