A Partridge in a Pear Tree is the first gift in the poem "The 12 Days of Christmas". A poem that many of us learned as a song. The origin of the written poem dates back to 1780 in England. However, because the French red-legged partridge commonly perches in trees, and the English grey partridge typically does not, it is believed the poem originated earlier in France.  The poem may have been a memory game of the memories and forfeits type. A leader says a verse, and all the players repeat the verse; the leader adds a line and each player must repeat the new line with all of the preceding ones. The first person to make a mistake must forfeit, or pay a penalty. Penalties were light, perhaps giving a kiss or sharing a sweet with the other players.* Nancy designed this particular pattern to make a quilt that could be, but does not necessarily need to be, a Christmas holiday quilt. - Feb 9-14, Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. Take a relaxing hand applique class from Nancy at Quilting on the Beach (see side panel for more information.)
- April 1-2, Seabeck, WA. Nancy will be teaching at The Applique Society Retreat.
