The design, naturally, was inspired by our recent trip to Hawaii. This is just Nancy's sketch of the actual pattern you will receive. Use the applique method of your choice to make the quilt (no instructions included), then send us pictures so we can share it with our readers!
The pattern will be sent as a digital file via email. We must have your email with your order of $35 or more to send the free pattern. The pattern will be 11" x 17" (actual size), requiring two pieces of paper to print, then tape together.
Remember: Send us pictures of your Palm in Paradise quilt and we'll share it with our readers!

BEST KEPT SECRET | |
Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens
We discovered this amazing garden just seven miles north of Hilo on the 4-Mile Scenic Drive at Onomea Bay (a short jaunt off Highway 19). As their brochure says, this is "A Garden in a Valley on the Ocean." And a beautiful one it is!
We cannot tell you all the amazing plants we saw, so we'll just show you a very few photos to whet your appetite.

Aloha!
Whew, we have had a busy two weeks in Hawaii. We came to the Big Island to lend our support to the local shops during their Big Island Shop Hop. Nancy teaching, Janice selling her hand-dyed fabrics, and together showing our quilts and demonstrating different aspects of Hawaiian quilting at three of the eight shops in the Shop Hop. What fun we have had! Keep going to see pictures and read the stories below.
Valentine's Day in February always gives us good reason to consider doing something a little extra special for the ones we love. If making a quilt is on your mind, we show you two good choices this month, plus a new bonus!
E komo mai,
Welcome,
Nancy & Janice |
BIG ISLAND SHOP HOP | |
Passport to quilting paradise!
We had such a delightful time at these quilt shops during our visit, we want to introduce you to the wonderful shop owners who hosted our events.
Quilt Passions:
| Owners: Robert and Karen |
Located in Kona, Quilt Passions is a destination shop, as you would expect, full of gorgeous fabrics, patterns, books, notions and even a large supply of Hawaiian quilts to purchase. Their signature Hoffman batik with turtles (honu) can be found no place else. Below, you see their special batik made up using our Herd of Turtles pattern.
Quilt Passions' forth annual Quilting on the Beach retreat was in full swing the day we visited, giving us the opportunity to provided a trunk show of our quilts and extra shopping opportunities to the retreat-goers during their Monday lunch break.
The following Monday Nancy taught 2 Fabric Applique Quilts in their bright, well-equipped classroom.
For more information about next year's Quilting on the Beach retreat, or the Quilt Passions signature batik, contact Robert or Karen.*
Pahala Quilting, Pahala:
| Owner: Donna |
You will find Pahala Quilting far from the usual tourist attractions, on the high slopes of Mauna Loa in the tiny town of Pahala. It is well worth the relaxing, scenic drive for a visit with Donna and a chance to shop in a relaxed and charming old farm house, left over from the days of sugar cane plantations.
| Nancy and Donna |
Our first event, at Pahala Quilting, was Nancy's Hawaiian Applique class. The next week we enjoyed a steady stream of enthusiastic quilters while showing our quilts, hand-dyed fabrics, and demonstrating echo quilting.
Donna's hospitality provides a welcome haven for quilters at the southern-most quilt shop in the USA.
Kilauea Kreations 2, Hilo:
| Owners: Kathy and Leimomi |
This mother-daughter team at Kilauea Kreations 2 have turned another old home into a delightful quilting destination for quilters on the wet side of Hawaii Island, in Hilo.
Conveniently located a short bus ride from where the cruise ships dock in Hilo, this shop needs to be on your must-visit list whether you arrive by ship or plane.
An air-conditioned classroom provided the perfect spot for us to showcase our quilts and fabric to an eager crowd. It was also where Nancy taught eight more people to design their very own Hawaiian quilts.
The Big Island Shop Hop continues through February 23. If you find yourself on the Big Island be sure to pick up your passport. Then take your journey around the island to collect all the blocks for your shop hop quilt, and your chance to enter their drawing if you fill your passport.
Mahalo nui loa (a great big thank you) to the shop owners, their staffs, and our fans who made our visit to the Big Island so much fun!
* Visit the Links page on our website to get contact details for each of these three shops. |
CROWNING GLORY -
Applique Quilt Borders and Table Runners
Choices, choices, choices
| Crowning Glory, 72" option |
| 18" option, placemat |
Often when you buy a pattern it is to make one quilt, pretty much exactly the way it shows on the cover. Our Crowning Glory pattern is filled with options! Not only can you make the pattern in different lengths, but you can use the finished quilt in different ways: as a tablerunner, placemat, wall hanging, bed runner, or as a border or panel in a larger quilt!
Here are the various size options we provide in the pattern:
- Long runner: 13" x 72"
- Medium runner: 13" x 30" (can also be a pillow case)
- Short runner: 13" x 18" (can also be a placemat)
| 30" option, pillow case |
Consider these dimensions as minimum sizes. You can make your quilt longer or wider by simply starting with a larger background fabric for your applique. See how versatile this pattern can be?
Visit our Borders and Runners Gallery to see Crowning Glory as a bed runner (aka bed scarf).
BONUS: Free instructions for making an easy pillow case.
Crowning Glory: multiple size options. Normally sells for $12.00, for a limited time you can get this pattern for just $10.00 Buy it here.
Can't find the exact fabric you envision for this quilt? Ask Janice to hand-dye a special piece just for you!

YOU ARE IN OUR HEARTS - Hawaiian Quilt
Sweet Treat
| You Are In Our Hearts |
If you have been subscribing to our newsletters for a long time, you have seen this pattern before. It is a favorite of ours in February, when we are thinking of the ones we love.
The hearts in this quilt are both obvious and subtle. Can you find all eight?
The flower is Plumeria, a popular flower in Hawaii for lei-making - fragrant and long-lasting.
To read more about this pattern see our September 2009 e-Newsletter.
Go to the Gallery of Hawaiian Quilts on our website to see more versions of this quilt.
You Are In Our Hearts: 42" square, $12.00. Get your pattern here.
We donate a portion of the proceeds from the sale of this pattern to help victims of disasters. Most recently we donated to help support victims of Hurricane Sandy. |
