Halloween Safety Poem
Clara Velasquez-Morales, WTRPC Article Contributor

Halloween is just around the corner; we're sure you're aware,
but parents and children please beware!
When it comes to dressing up and trick-or-treating,
there are just a few tips that you should be reading.
Remember to throw all unwrapped candies away
From candies with tears, rips, and holes please do stray.
Inspect all fruits and goods carefully
For foreign objects like pins and glass you may see
Hiding in a brownie, a cupcake, or a cookie,
But you can avoid dangers if you just take a lookie.
Exposure to dry ice is potentially harmful.
Drinking and touching dry ice can be awful.
It can cause nasty burns and some tissue damage.
Just call the tox center, you'll have the advantage
That these types of cases, we can easily manage.
Glow stick liquid may cause mild irritation,
It can cause some redness and a burning sensation.
Call the experts and quick relief you will find
With the suggestions they give, you'll also find peace of mind.
Always test make-up on a small area of skin,
Check for sensitivities before applying it to your chin.
Remove make-up before bed to avoid irritation,
Discard smelly make-up, it could be a sign of contamination.
We would like to wish you a fun and safe Halloween,
Whether you dress up as a witch or a pretty prom queen,
Remember to call if you have any questions,
We can provide treatment recommendations.
The West Texas Regional Poison Control Center is awake all night.
If you have any questions just call us and you'll be all right.

Have a Spooktacular Halloween!

It's a spooktacular time of year! A time for trick or treating, pumpkin carving and costume wearing fun! What am I talking about? Halloween of course! Here at the Texas Poison Center Network (TPCN), we want you to enjoy your Halloween festivities but we also want you to stay safe! The TPCN offers parents the following safety tips to help prevent exposures and injuries on Halloween:

Candy and treats: Inspect all candy for any signs of tampering (tears, pinholes, discoloration, etc.) before eating or allowing children to eat. Check all candy and edibles for choking hazards. Children should avoid eating homemade treats from strangers and any treats that may contain marijuana or other drugs. If you suspect a child has consumed candy containing a drug, call 1-800-222-1222 for immediate assistance.

Cosmetics: Test face makeup in a small area of skin first (preferably on the arm) to check for allergic reaction before applying it to the face. Avoid decorating the face or body with products that aren't intended for the skin. Avoid the eye area when applying costume makeup to the face, as well as remove makeup before bedtime to prevent eye and/or skin irritation. Throw out any makeup that has a very bad smell; this could be a sign of contamination.

Remember the Texas Poison Center Network is here to provide free and confidential information and treatment advice 24-hours per day, seven days a week, including holidays! If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at 1-800-222-1222.
