October 10 Lunch Meeting:
Integrating Specs with BIM
Dick Owen, CSI

Our chapter meetings are off to a great fall start. Our October lunch program promises to be a cannot-miss event. We are fortunate to have a panel discussion representing two points of view from specification writers with a general contractor's input. Christopher Dixon, CCS, LEEDŽ AP Senior Associate / Architect (DC) - Specifications, NBBJ will start the discussion explaining the National BIM Standard and what it says about specifications. He will also discuss using eSpecs for Revit as a tool for spec/BIM integration. Beth Stroshane, CCS, LEEDŽ AP, Managing Partner, Applied Building Information LLC will follow with a discussion on BSD SpecLink as a tool for spec/BIM integration. The general contractor's input will be presented by Lowrey Pugh, BIM Coordinator, UW Bothell 3 project, Lease Crutcher Lewis. Lowrey will discuss how BIM is being used in the field including design team collaboration, O&M manuals and as-built contract documents. He will also discuss spec integration opportunities and challenges with BIM from the contractor's point of view. Don't miss this opportunity and be prepared for a lively discussion. Note the start time is 11:00 am. See you there!

Wow. Thanks to everyone who attended the Bullitt Center tour last month. It was a great turnout for the tour and the pizza at Piecora's afterwards. Melissa Balestri deserves full credit for starting out our new year with a spectacular event. Thanks, too, to the vendors who turned out and brought their products and expertise to the attendees. And Frank Calabrese gets a nod for his recommendation of Piecora's. Well done, everyone. And, based on the overwhelmingly positive comments that evening, we will hope to have more tours in the future. The Bullitt Center really rolled out the red carpet for us and enabled our group to tour areas of the building that the general public will never see. If you didn't make it you really missed a fun and educational experience to say nothing of great salad, pizza and social hour.

Our October meeting will start with the first of our lunch meetings. Please note that we are starting at 11:30 and will end at 1:00. Don't forget the seminar starting at 1:15. Please see below for the program details. Our hope is that the lunch meetings will make attendance easier for some members who have conflict with evening functions. See you there.

I am looking forward to representing the Puget Sound Chapter at CONSTRUCT, the national CSI Conference in Nashville. Everyone says it is well worthwhile and we can be very proud that chapter members Beth Stroshane and Marc Chavez are scheduled to make presentations. Go Puget Sound Chapter!

How Architects, Engineers, Consultants, and Contractors use BIM and Identify Conflicts
$20 members, $40 non-members
1:15-3:15 pm
2 AIA CEU pending

Industry standard processes involving BIM technology are still being developed. How can Architects, Engineers, Consultants, and Contractors best coordinate with one another? Which methods have proven to be successful and how does "everyone else" use BIM? The focus of this panel discussion will be to discuss and evaluate coordination efforts, and to leave with an understanding of BIM capabilities.

Panel members will include Jeremy McClanathan P.E., LEED AP from CDi Engineers (specializes in energy modeling);  Mike Adams, BIM Manager at Integrus Architecture (coordinates BIM efforts with consultants); and GLY Construction team members that regularly identify model conflicts using BIM conflict identification software.

Bullitt Center Tour Recap
Kelly Laleman, CSI, CCS

The new Puget Sound Chapter year was kicked off on a high note with a tour of the Bullitt Center. Attendance was the highest it has been for a September meeting in recent years - 44 people turned out. James Connelly, International Living Future Institute, commenced the evening with a presentation about restricted materials on the project, and the resulting challenges and opportunities encountered. Next, Rob Peņa, University of Washington Integrated Design Lab, led an informative tour up and down, all around the building, including spaces not typically included on tours. Both presenters were knowledgeable and answered many thoughtful questions from CSI members. After the tour, the group headed over to Piecora's, for a delightful social pizza dinner. If you weren't there, you missed out!

Why I Got Certified as a CCS
Konrad Hee, CSI, CCS

I had the goal of becoming a Certified Construction Specifier (CCS) the minute I decided to practice as one. Making that a reality became more urgent when I found myself being positioned as a consulting specifier. What better way to prove to clientele that I was taking the role seriously and had an understanding of underlying principles and best practices? And while obtaining a CCS certification was valuable as a representation to others, it was equally important in building my self-perception as a credible source and provider of services, as I continue to grow in knowledge and understanding as a specifier. Now working for an owner, I get to see the resulting effort of many different 'spec writers' and observe how they work and apply such principles (or not!). And, maintaining my CCS standing is helpful in reminding myself of the need to 'keep up,' as I enjoy the craft of being a construction specifier on smaller in-house projects as well as side projects that come my way.

Why are you NOT certified?

The Spectrum posed this question to several certified members and is publishing responses each month. Your answer is wanted, too. Email the Spectrum at office@psccsi.org for inclusion in an upcoming issue.
2-4-6-8... Who do we appreciate?
Anna Anderson Anna Anderson, CSI

A very powerful force in retaining members is: appreciation. When members are welcomed, affirmed, acknowledged, and thanked, they feel connected to the organization. When a member is accepted and appreciated just for being there, the person feels valued by his or her chapter. As important as it is for us to create valuable learning and networking opportunities, let's not overlook team-building, and how the effect of making members feel their presence in our organization is valued.  When you think about how to retain new members, use good hospitality and friendliness to make them feel valued for their decision to join and participate in CSI. People don't quit when they are recognized and respected for their presence and contributions.

What Happened Then
The CSI Puget Sound Chapter has been publishing amazing technical information for decades. In our fast moving world it is amazing how much some things change, and how much others remain the same. The following article was first published in October 1984, Volume 27 Spectrum (and reproduced here with typos and misspellings). If this sparks a memory you would like to share please email office@psccsi.org and share our rich history. Enjoy.

On the Lighter Side
Nothing of substance is appearing in this column this month because of the inability of the overrated author of this column has finally reached its plateau and having achieved this ultimate level of incompetency, can only now deteriorate into what will be considered, now and forever more, as abject oblivion. In addition to the foregoing comment and narrative, and in keeping with the highest ideals of journalistic community, which speaks to short concise sentences, having only one subject and one verb, and a minimum of supportive verbiage, let it suffice to say that the author just plain BLEW IT. A post script would not be complete unless it noted that said author has been thoroughly and completely, I might add, expunged for continuing the long established tradition of missing the previously established and sacred DEAD LINE.
(If on the other hand, as a good attorney says, the material had been received in either a timely or professional manner, it would have dealt with expansion, or implied expansion of the vocabulary. This was going to be important because the author read on the wall of the men's room in an award winning facility in the Pacific Northwest, that success is directly related to the size of one's vocabulary.)
The word that has been selected for this issue was going to be the word ANACHRONISM, derived from the Greeks and dealing with time. In fact the word means "a person or thing that is out of chronological order, or misplacing of persons, events or objects in regard to each other." Not only is it a fun word to say, and can readily be incorporated into your everyday vocabulary, it is totally applicable to the present circumstance.
Until next month, when we will discuss the word PUNCTUALITY, spend some of your time on the lighter side.
