From the President

Vicki Long photo Vicki Long, CSI

Greetings,

As your new Chapter President I would like to first thank Frank Calabrese for not only his great job as President but also for his friendship. He left me some BIG shoes to fill, and I mean BIG! See, even his jokes have started to rub off on me.

I also want to thank the Board for their commitment to the Puget Sound Chapter and their strong sense of duty in representing the best interests of the Chapter and the Chapter members. Julie Taylor and Integrus Architecture are to be acknowledged for opening their doors for our Board meetings and Julie's recording of those meetings.

We now have two new Board members Robert Mandy, your new Director, and Beth Stroshane, your new President-Elect. And soon we will have new committee chairs and members and I would encourage you to get involved by joining a committee. For a small time commitment you will find large rewards.

I look forward to the next year as your President. As always, you will find the committee members and Board members open and receptive to your input - in fact it's vital. We will have our strategic planning meeting in August and you're all invited. Please join us. It's going to be a fun year!

Have a great summer, and be careful out there.

-Vicki

With a career in the coatings industry spanning more than 30 years, I have held various sales and marketing positions with companies such as Ferro, Courtaulds, and Akzo Nobel. Many of these years were spent focusing on the automotive industry, but more recently the focus shifted to architectural applications. Following retirement from Akzo Nobel earlier this year, I have been retained by Akzo Nobel as a powder coating consultant. Activities within this position include providing consultation on coating specifications for architectural applications. My 30 year career in the coatings industry has given me great insight into the chemistry, manufacture, application and finishing capabilities of coatings. I am passionate about helping architects and Specifiers find the right coating product to achieve the finish they need, while helping them benefit from all the sustainability advantages that powder offers. I am based in the Seattle area and work closely with manufacturers, architects and consultants to advise and assist with specification writing, product choice, design capability and the technical aspects of powder coating.

What Happened Then
The CSI Puget Sound Chapter has been publishing amazing technical information for decades. In our fast moving world it is amazing how much some things change, and how much others remain the same. The following article was first published in February 1958, Volume 2, Issue 11 The CSI News (and reproduced here with typos and misspellings). If this sparks a memory you would like to share please email office@psccsi.org and share our rich history. Enjoy.

Better Specs vs. Less  Cost
By William Akerman
(from Specifications Digest)

The writer, as Chief of Specifications for a large architectural firm, is particularly interested in cutting costs of specification production but at the same time producing better specifications. The use and reference to manufacturer's printed specifications has done just this. It has cut down the amount of laborious hand writing and copying and has given us time to read, digest, and compare the manufacturers' literature. The method can best be described by example.

Suppose I am writing the trade section Resilient Flooring and particularly regular asphalt tile. Ordinarily the specifier would cut and clip from previous specifications for asphalt tile, or laboriously copy portions of one or several asphalt tile manufacturers' printed specifications. Our system would simply make reference to the manufacturers' printed specifications.

As an example, our specification for asphalt tile flooring would read as follows:

A. Where noted asphalt time, the tile shall be 9" x 9" x 1/8" gauge asphalt tile manufactured by one of the following manufacturers:
(Here appears a list of acceptable manufacturers.)

B. Tiles shall be standard grade, of color selected by the Architect from manufacturers' tiles in Price Range C with one color per area.

C. All adhesives shall be waterproof, of type recommended by the manufacturer.

D. All other materials and applications shall be in strict accordance with the manufacturers' printed specifications.

We have covered all contingencies with several advantages to both the specifier and designer.

By research we know and state what we consider equal materials, and instead of the drudgery, we have had time to read each of the manufacturer's specifications to verify that each one named covers the requirements adequately.

In addition to brevity it has another advantage; it is not complicated. One day our checker came to the Specification Office with toilet partition shop drawing in hand with red notes all over it. He was ready to reject for the following reason:

The original specification required the partitions to be "_____ or equal" and then went on to describe each part, application, and erection sequence in great detail.

However, we selected the "or equal" material of a reputable manufacturer, whose equipment was acceptable to our office. This manufacturer's standards varied slightly from the one named by using 18 gauge where the specified material was 20 gauge or sometimes 20 gauge where the specification named 18 gauge.

The approved manufacturer did not use the same type of hinge as that specified. It the specifier had copied his spec from the finally selected manufacturer's catalog it would have come out perfectly, saved our checker a lot of time and aggravation, and everyone would have known exactly what we would accept.

Our specification now reads:

A. The toilet partitions shall be overhead braced flush type manufactured by one of the following manufacturers:
(Manufacturers are listed)

B. Partitions shall be standard products of the manufacturer and all materials and applications shall be in accordance with the manufacturer's printed specifications.

C. Finish shall be baked enamel over bonderized, galvanized steel of color selected by the Architect from manufacturer's standard colors.

The writer knows of only one limitation of this type of specification; it could become obsolete. However, by the cut and clip method, the specifications can also become obsolete. The writer therefore, reviews his specifications regularly and makes sure his standards are kept up to date.
