President's Message
Frank Calabrese, CSI

First and foremost, I want to thank each and every one of you for giving me the opportunity to serve you and our Puget Sound Chapter this year. I know Vicki Long, Barclay Dean Architectural, is ready to take the helm as our new 2013-2014 President. With Vicki, the Chapter will have an exceptionally successful year. Vicki will have a GREAT Board to work with this coming year: President Elect Beth Stroshane, ZGF; Vice President Eli Lemanski; Secretary Julie Taylor, Integrus; Treasurer Eric Peterson, Anderson Specialties; Director Robert Mandy, Lake Washington Institute of Technology; Director Jim Fair, Fair Building Technology; Director Mike Murphy, Parker Paint; and Director Garth Tait, Hartung Glass. I am looking forward to rounding out the board by serving as the chapter's Past President.

I also would like to thank all that helped with and all that attended ProSpec 2013. Sir Peter Cook proved to be a most warm, friendly, entertaining and intelligent keynote speaker. The ProSpec Committee certainly has their work cut out for them as soon as planning starts for ProSpec 2014. I know they'll once again succeed in putting together an evening that no one will want to miss.

For those of you not traveling to Spokane for our CSI Pacific Northwest Regional Conference please join us on Thursday, 13 June for our Chapter Meeting / Awards Banquet. This will be an evening dinner meeting so please don't forget to register.

In closing, once again thank you all for your participation and for a most wonderful and memorable year!

Tony Chiang of Hilti will present the fundamental principles of anchor theory, anchor types and selection, and current building code requirements. Tony earned a Civil Engineering degree from Seattle University, and practiced structural design prior to joining Hilti seven years ago.

IBC 2012 Seismic Bracing of Architectural Components
Tim Nordstrom, PE, SE

When do you need a professional engineer's stamp? Tim Nordstrom, PE, SE will address architectural components that require seismic bracing, the new requirement for stairs, and specification coordination. Tim is a licensed Structural Engineer in the State of Washington and is actively involved with the Structural Engineers Association of Washington (SEAW). He provides structural design assistance for Star Seismic, manufacturer of Buckling Restrained Braces (BRB).

Why I Became Certified
Kelly Laleman, CSI, CCS

I became a Certified Construction Specifier not only to gain credibility, but also to directly enhance my duties as a specifier. The CCS study material proved applicable to my daily activities, which has enabled me to communicate important items to project teams, resulting in clearer contract documents and a higher level of understanding among the project team.

What Happened Then?
The CSI Puget Sound Chapter has been publishing amazing technical information for decades. In our fast moving world it is amazing how much some things change, and how much others remain the same. The following article was first published in May 1985, Volume 27, Spectrum (and reproduced here with typos and misspellings). If this sparks a memory you would like to share please email office@psccsi.org and share our rich history. Enjoy.

On the Lighter Side

Deadline time once again and instant panic. Where are all those clever clippings I have been saving for this use. It appears that due to a complete lack of memory and self will, there is nothing resembling order in this office at this time. You remember that the real architect feels that clutter is kin to success. In such cases it is sad indeed when clutter exists for clutter's sake only.

Do not dispair! Our favorite groupie, Roger, has saved the day. It now appears that we shall be forever indebted to him for this month's subject matter. It has been some time since we last received copy from Roger and that may have been a blessing in disguise. I will let you be the judge of that.

Since we as an organization profess to dealing with specifications, it is appropriate that we glean something along those lines whenever possible or probable. The following has been carefully gleaned from a much more substantial list, only the highlights have been included to protect the innocent.

An unknown author provided the following material for those who deal with section 15060 Pipe & Pipe Fittings.

  1. All pipe is to be made of a long hole hole, surrounded by metal concentric with the hole.
  2. All pipe is to be hollow throughout the entire length.
  3. All pipe is to be of the very best quality, perfectly tubular or pipular.
  4. O.D. of all pipe must exceed the I.D., otherwise the hole will be on the outside.
  5. All pipe is to be supplied with nothing in the hole so that water, steam, or other stuff can be put inside at a later date.
  6. All pipe must be supplied without rust, as this can be more readily put on at jobsite.
  7. All completed piping lines must go somewhere and connect to something.
  8. All piping must be installed two times. A correct installation the first time is not permitted.
  9. All valves must have an opening on each end with a flapper in the middle that goes up and down or sideways when you turn the wheel or crank so that it will close and open. Otherwise the stuff will run out of the hole.
Well that appears to be the limit for new data for all you specification writers for this issue. Perhaps we can expand upon this in a later edition. For now, we thank roger for his contribution. Stuff like this is critical. In the interim, sit back from time to time and if you cannot make the trip, at least let you mind wander on the lighter side.
