May 9 Chapter Lunch Meeting
Masonry Cavity Walls - The Original Rainscreen

Dick Owen, CSI

Rainscreen wall systems are a hot topic in the construction industry, and our May dinner program will examine moisture management principles of the "original" rainscreen wall system - a masonry cavity wall.  Jim O'Neill, Sales Engineer, Keene Building Products, will discuss the means and methods for designing and constructing a clean, unobstructed drainage plane in brick cavity walls with 2 inches of airspace, walls with less than 2 inches of airspace, and walls with continuous insulation and air space.  Jim has conducted numerous drainage and ventilation test studies on a variety of masonry wall applications and will offer his recommended best practices for creating a continuously insulated, well drained, and ventilated masonry cavity wall. This is an opportunity for you to learn more about masonry cavity walls so plan on attending and bring a guest to share what CSI has to offer.

President's Message
Frank Calabrese, CSI

Frank CalabreseHappy spring to all! I cannot believe it is May already and our CSI year 2012-2013 is coming to an end. Before we know it-it will be summer. Is anyone up for a summer challenge? Imagine how much our chapter would benefit if between now and the September dinner meeting, if we all invited and were able to get one person each to join. If we all got just one associate, co-worker or industry friend to join that would be a great help as we move our chapter forward. Please join me in this challenge. Thanks.

Also, do not forget that the May chapter meeting will be a lunch meeting. You can register now. It is our plan that lunch meetings from now on will be serving a meal similar to what we are accustomed to during the dinner meetings.

Last, in regard to our lunch and or dinner meetings, I would love to receive any ideas that you may have that may help us grow the number of members that attend our monthly chapter meetings. Please send your thoughts, comments or critiques to me at frank.calabrese@coastalspecifiedproducts.com.

May 9 Seminars

Seminar 1, 2:00 - 3:30 pm, 1.5 AIA LU pending
Advances in Exterior Finish Systems (EIFS)
Dan Crates, Product Representative, Sto

Exterior Finish Systems (EIFS) are one of the most energy efficient means to achieve code mandated continuous insulation (ci) in new and existing construction. This presentation takes us beyond this fact and delves into reasons why EIFS should be a consideration as a smart, durable, and friendly wall system solution.

This seminar includes detailing to achieve effective rainscreen drainage, continuous insulation, and membrane air barriers; testing and evaluations of EIFS by Oak Ridge National Laboratory and NFPA; means to achieve EIFS systems that are almost impenetrable and shed dirt; design of joint treatments that will not leak; and how the insurance industry is evolving and how that affects insurance for applicators, general contractors, and design professionals. Witness a drainable EIFS cutaway with durability similar to a concrete wall. Lastly, see project solutions where EIFS can be beautiful and inspiring.

Seminar 2, 3:30 - 5:00 pm, 1.5 AIA LU pending
Rain Screen Systems for Controlling Moisture and Reducing Energy Consumption
Dave Sommer, Interra Architectural Products
Michael Bousfield, Cascadia Windows/Cascadia Clip

This seminar focuses on some innovative and rainscreen wall assemblies designed to meet thermal performance provisions of ASHRAE 90.1 and other code-prescribed targets for our region. Conventional wall assemblies fall short. This requires new design solutions that take into consideration thermal conductivity of material using documented thermal modeling and calculations to show conformance.

Learning objectives include understanding building types subject to ASHRAE 90.1 thermal performance standards, compliance paths available, non-linear effect of highly conductive components on total effective R-values/U-factors of wall assemblies, how conventional wall assemblies compare, aspects of exterior wall detailing to target for thermal improvements, and conventional and state-of-the art solutions that save time and cost.
