Daylighting Design: How It Works
David Maughan

Our March program speaker is Mark Godfrey, Lighting Designer at Interface Engineering in Portland. He will present a comprehensive picture of daylighting technology and design, including the benefits, challenges and failures of daylighting. The presentation will discuss cost comparisons of electrical lighting vs daylighting, and also cost differences between various daylighting systems. Throughout his presentation Mark will have many examples of daylighting solutions taken from the projects his firm has worked on over the last 10 to 15 years. Come on March 14th to learn more about this important aspect of designing energy efficient buildings. See you at the meeting.

Message from the President
Frank CalabreseFrank Calabrese, CSI

ProSpec 2013 is almost upon us. Table sales have been brisk with 21 of 34 tables sold as of mid-February. We are extremely fortunate to have a very special keynote speaker this year; one of the UK's acclaimed professors and architects, Sir Peter Cook. Don't miss out on what will most certainly be one of our best ProSpecs to date.

After much positive feedback in regard to our January lunch meeting we are planning to schedule our May Chapter meeting as a lunch event. The time will be expanded to give our Quick Pitch guest and main presenter a more relaxed, less rushed, environment. Also, we will negotiate a lunch menu that is closer to what we have enjoyed at our dinner meetings. Stay tuned, more to follow.

In closing, I would like to endorse CSI President-Elect Casey Robb's sentiments on CSI and volunteering. Casey states:
"Once upon a time" one of my good mentors at CSI told me - "the more you volunteer your time and talent at CSI the more you will get out of our great organization". At first, I thought volunteering meant going to the local meetings, networking and simply showing up for events on my own time. I soon realized it means so much more within CSI to really get involved. It can actually help you step up your game and advance the industry.

The benefits of volunteering include:
  • Networking and collaborating with building experts across the design, building materials and construction disciplines
  • Creating products and services to meet the needs of a changing building design and construction industry
  • Enhancing your resume with hands-on work to improve project delivery
  • Recognition and promotion of your expertise in a particular area

Solutions for Global Warming in Seattle
Steve Moddemeyer, Principal, CollinsWoerman

How do we design buildings to resist the unpredictable, such as climate change, technological advancement, and natural disasters? Steve Moddemeyer, former senior advisor to Seattle Public Utilities and the Department of Planning and Development, will discuss how Seattle and cities in the Northwest are beginning to adopt robust and resilient strategies for the 21st century. Moddenmeyer will address design at multiple scales with a semi-autonomous nested systems approach, including building scale concepts such as smart and passive systems, and neighborhood scale concepts such as district energy and water systems, open space, and building placement.

Seminar 2, 3:30-5:00 pm, 1.5 AIA LU pending
Living Building Challenge
James Connelly, Coordinator, Living Building Challenge and Declare Program

Declare was created by the International Living Future Institute to be an "ingredients label" for building products. It aligns with the Living Building Challenge's Red Lists and Appropriate Sourcing Imperatives, resulting in streamlined material documentation and project certification. James Connelly will present the basics of the program and how it relates to other product certification programs such as the Health Product Declaration (HPD) and Cradle to Cradle certification.
