Picnic With Reading
Susan McGee is a grandmother 10 times over, so you could say she's quite the busy woman. Yet when letters went out from Burgin Elementary about a Reading Picnic during the lunch periods, she leaped at the chance to pop by. "I love spending time with my grandchildren," McGee said. "So when you have fun times like this, it makes it even better." | Susan McGee and grandson Riian T. enjoy reading together during the Reading Picnic at Burgin Elementary.

Venture Believes
Each Monday at Venture High School a conversation is taking place even though, at times, there's no actual conversation. That's the day faculty and staff show up in T-shirts with black and white lettering that read, "Keep Calm and Believe in Yourself." Principal Beverley McReynolds wanted to provide a non-verbal reminder to the nearly 300-person student body of the school's chief mission statement that says, "We believe that all students can learn and become productive, responsible citizens through a balance of mutual commitment and personal integrity." | Venture High School teachers, administrators and staff wear shirts that remind students, "Keep Calm and Believe in Yourself."

A Gollywhopper at Martin
The Gollywhopper Games at Martin High School are affectionately referred to as the educational equivalent of having your cake and eating it, too. Dunn Elementary Principal Mary Helen Burnett might have described it that way a few years back, and every year her students are always eager to be a part of this annual event that truly is one part carnival, one part math exercise. | Boles Junior High eighth grader Adam P. takes a rocket to the face during one of the Gollywhopper Games at Martin High School.
