Exploring Careers
There was a time when learning about a career happened in college. Then high school. Now elementary schools are being introduced to careers outside the once-a-year career fair where students listen to professionals address their classroom. The AISD offered its first Student Career Exploration Night for fourth through eighth graders at the AISD Professional Development Center, citing that it's never too early for students to get a head start on knowing what they might want to do. While many students aren't sure at that age what they may want to do with their work lives, some know quite early. Student Career Exploration Night serves both. | Students in fourth through eighth grades took time to explore different career options at the first-ever Student Career Exploration Night.

New Vision at Atherton
Not all students who can't see the board well in class say they can't see it - most just say nothing at all. They often decide to try and overcome the sight deficit by other means, and sometimes their grades suffer. Then there are students who need glasses and say they need them but can't get them due to cost or transportation. The nonprofit Essilor Vision Foundation has for years helped fill the gap with its Kids Vision for Life program that goes into schools to provide vision screenings and prescription eyewear - for free. | Atherton Elementary was among six AISD schools that had students screened and fitted for new eyewear from Kids Vision for Life.

Dragon Dash
When it comes to raising money to help students and staff, Dunn Elementary thinks big. Consider the Dragon Dash: it sounds like a 5K run designed to lure students and nearby residents. But Dragon Dash was more than that. A half-day was set aside for students to head out onto the school's athletic field and run a lap. Or five. Or 50. Depends on how long they could go until the bell stopped them. | It was a sprint to start the Dragon Dash at Dunn Elementary to help raise money for the school.
