Inspired to Read-ln at Hill
When LaDonna Fields invited storyteller Toni Simmons to the first Hill Elementary African-American Read-In, it wasn't just to tell stories. It was to get the students to tell their own stories. Simmons' gift is the ability to bring stories to life with the use of rhythms, songs and audience participation. By the end of her session to Hill second graders, Simmons' hope was that they would go pick up a book to continue the magic. | Storyteller Toni Simmons with Hill Elementary students during a session of the school's African-American Read-In.

Adams Students Soar in 5K
Before Adams Elementary sixth grader Sydnee M. ran in the Cowtown's Cook Children's 5K in Fort Worth, her running experience consisted of nothing more than scampering around her house or playing soccer and other sports in the park. But running 3.1 miles - without stopping - was quite the challenge. Yet when kindergarten teacher Dionne Carter put out the word that she wanted some students to try running the Cowtown 5K race, Sydnee said, "Why not?" It helped that she was already running with Adams' running club that practiced a couple times a week after school. | Members of the Adams running club, who were all set up with new running shoes from the Cowtown C.A.L.F. program, ran in the Cook Children's 5K during Cowtown weekend.

STAAR Ready at Carter

Carter Junior High eighth grader Kylei S. is ready for the upcoming STAAR tests. She thinks. "I'm not worried about reading, and I'm not worried about the writing part," Kylei said. How about math? "Well," she said. "I'm not real sure about math." No problem. In order to get ready for math - or any other STAAR test subject coming in March and April - Kylei and her Carter classmates can receive test prep on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4 to 6 p.m. Those who can't make the after-school tutoring sessions have the option of getting help Monday through Thursday for 45 minutes beginning at 8 a.m. That's not all. There are also Saturday sessions from 9 a.m. to noon. And, even more, all students were invited to a STAAR Night in the school cafeteria recently. Hot dogs and chips were served and the school offered various activities for younger siblings who couldn't be left at home. | Kylei S., Deysy R and Princess H. attend Carter STAAR Night to help them prepare for the upcoming STAAR tests.

Chief Checks on Academy
Arlington Police Chief Will Johnson has roamed the halls of Martin High School a number of times. Not in his law enforcement role, but as the parent of a daughter who is a freshman at the school this year. So it was a treat for the students in the AISD Police Academy to have Johnson not only lecture to the class for well over an hour, but also join them during physical training. | Arlington Police Chief Will Johnson teaches a class at the Arlington ISD Police Academy located at Martin High School.
