Positive Signs
Nic S. and Tyler W. were new kids on the freshman block at Martin High School four years ago. Their you-watch-my-back-I'll-watch-your-back union helped them navigate the newness of the Warriors football program as newbies. As their stock rose, the two would make a vow to not only do well enough to snag college scholarships but also to compete at the same Division I school. Mission accomplished. During AISD's districtwide National Signing Day event, Nic and Tyler signed National Letters of Intent to accept college scholarships to the University of North Texas. "We said we would and now we are," Nic said with a wide grin. | Bowie High School football signees DeAndre C. (Navarro College), Anthony H. (Colorado State University) and Trey P. (Texas Lutheran University) are all smiles during the AISD districtwide National Signing Day ceremony.

Dads and Daughters
When Jason C. was asked about writing his daughter's name on a sticky note and placing it on a description of popular gemstones taped to the walls of the Farrell Elementary cafeteria, he didn't quite know how such a connection could be made. He walked by descriptions on a ruby, opal and sapphire, but he stopped at diamond during Dads and Daughters Night at the school. "Diamonds are forever and shine bright," Cage said. "Just like my daughter." | Third grader Haviland C. and her dad Jason having fun during Dads and Daughters Nigh at Farrell Elementary.

Multicultural Bliss at Swift
Ask Swift Elementary Family Representative Migdalia Schargel to name the various cultures and countries represented in the school, and even she hesitated a bit before giving an answer. "Pakistan," she said. "India, Jordan, Bangladesh, Mexico, Egypt, Venezuela, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Japan." She paused a bit. "Oh, and Korea and Vietnam." There's probably more. Schargel, who is from Venezuela, helps organize the school's big Multicultural Celebration each year, and each time it gets larger and more involved. | Swift Elementary third grader Lucy L. and fourth grader Eric A. sing a song in Chinese during the school's Multicultural Festival.

From Martin to the Amazon
You could say that 2008 Martin alumna Kerri Brown is very accustomed to The Question. She would get it each time she mentioned her major of anthropology while an undergrad at the University of Texas at Austin. What, the inquiring mind always wanted to know, are you going to do with that? Now that Brown is a Ph.D. candidate in anthropology at Southern Methodist University, she still gets The Question. The answer, though, is quite simple: Whatever she wants. | Martin High School alumna Kerri Brown is currently in Brazil on a prestigious Fulbright-Hays Fellowship.
