Donuts and Dad

Bruce McHenry works the night-shift - 3 p.m. to 3 a.m. - each weekday and alternating weekends, so imagine what it was like on a frigid, 25-degree morning when he had to get up after just a couple hours sleep, get his clothes on and head to his kids' elementary school.
"Not fun," McHenry said.
But by the time he got to Roark Elementary with his two kids in tow, grabbed a donut and some juice and sat down to hangout with his children, he'd changed his tune. | Trinity W. (left) and Tremontre W. have donuts with their dad Bruce McHenry at Roark's first-ever Donuts with Dads gathering.

Cheers for AISD

Trying to prepare for a national competition while still logging time in support of a school's various sports teams - football, volleyball and basketball, for example - can be quite taxing. But each year, that's what cheerleading squads striving to do well in national competition must balance. | The Lamar cheer squad competes at the National Cheerleaders Association Senior and Junior High School Championships.

A Soaring Newcomer

As principal of Newcomer Center, Mark Strand has seen it all - and certainly heard it all - from students with astonishing stories of survival and fortitude. Young students arriving at a place where they often don't know the language or have a feel for the culture can be a scary, unsettling proposition.
"You have some kids that come here and kind of dip their toes in the water," Strand said of Newcomer Center, a school designed to help seventh through 10th grade non-English-speaking students prepare for their home school by teaching the English language in all content areas.
"Then you have those who just jump right in," he said. | Newcomer junior Gerardo R. was honored as the AISD Student of the Month for January.

Science - and a Movie

The movie was "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs," which made perfect sense seeing that this was a Science Movie Night and the film is about a loner who concocts a contraption that makes it rain food. Hamburgers, potato salad, huge chicken legs. You name it, it probably fell from the sky.
"Meatballs" wasn't the only lure, of course. Students who showed up at Sam Houston High School last week for the after-school event did so to check out the handful of science experiments being conducted in the corridor leading into the auditorium where the film was being shown. Several students spent their time browsing through the experiments, including one that involved a pretty cool example of how Claymation, or clay animation, works. | Senior Lorena V. and junior Juan C. test out an experiment during Sam Houston High School's recent Science Movie Night.
