Early Welcome to UTA        

Seguin High School junior Kaila Wherry received an early Christmas present: An invitation to attend the University of Texas at Arlington. And she hadn't even applied.

Neither had about 1,500 other AISD juniors who, by the end of their sophomore year, ranked among the top 20 percent of their graduating class.

A New Marquee for Pope      

One of the first things parents notice as they drop off their children at Pope Elementary School is that they no longer need to go dashing into the school to see when a particular event is occurring. Or if school is out on Friday.

Now, they can merely look on the marquee. The digital one where, if you stand there long enough, you can get a good sense of what's going on at Pope. | Pope Principal Celina Kilgore addresses the crowd in front of the school's new marquee at its dedication ceremony.

"The Voice" at Wood     

Brandon Chase had already been knocked off the music competition television show "The Voice" when he showed up at Wood Elementary School, a guitar slung across his shoulder. No matter. By the time Chase finished belting out several songs, the line of autograph-seeking students snaked across the stage, and students were eager to get closer to a guy they had watched on television. | After encouraging students to follow their dreams, Brandon Chase sings to students at Wood Elementary.

Celebrating Diversity     

Rain didn't stop the 2013 Courtyard Celebration - it just made it more intimate. The annual event that celebrates cultural diversity with music and dance performances by area artists and talent from AISD schools and organizations simply went indoors at the East Arlington Public Library after the courtyard was drenched with rain.  | The Bowie High School Ballet Folklorico troupe performs at the 2013 Courtyard Celebration.

On Dec. 10 and 11, the Capital Needs Steering Committee is hosting four community dialogues to solicit feedback from community members about future capital needs in the areas of facilities, technology, transportation and fine arts.
