Attitudes towards Marital Infidelity over Time

In 2014, 79% of U.S. adults disapproved of sexual relations with someone other than the marriage partner, according to a recently released NCFMR profile, Attitudes towards Marital Infidelity (FP-16-12). However, the percentage of adults who reported that such behavior is always wrong varied by generation. Four-fifths of those in the Mature/Silent generation and of those in the Baby Boomer generation were disapproving of marital infidelity. Generation X is the birth cohort who expressed the greatest disapproval of sexual relationships with someone other than the marriage partner (82%), whereas Millennials were the most permissive of such behavior (75%). The Millennials' more permissive attitudes may explain the decrease in the overall share of U.S. adults who disapproved of marital infidelity between 2008 and 2014 (84% to 79%, respectively). The full profile describes differences in attitudes towards marital infidelity over time and across demographic characteristics.
